About BT SmartTalk

BT SmartTalk lets you make calls from your mobile at your BT home calling plan rates. So it could save you money if you’re a BT customer.
With the free app you can make calls on your mobile using your home phone plan, through your mobiles wi-fi or mobile data connection. And it would cost the same as if you were using your landline at home. So if you get unlimited anytime calls on your home phone calling plan, you’ll get the same on SmartTalk. Smart, right?
Why get BT SmartTalk?
• Avoid expensive mobile roaming costs when you’re abroad – call back to the UK for the same price you’d pay if you were using your home phone.
• Keep in touch even if you don’t have much signal by making calls over wi-fi.
• Make calls even when someone else is on the home phone, using wi-fi or your mobile data connection.
• Get free calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers (if they’re part of your home calling plan).
• Download on up to five different smartphones so your family can share the savings. (You’ll need a unique BT ID for each account which can be created during sign-up).
• Call other mobiles without having to worry about topping up your Pay-As-You-Go credit.
More about BT SmartTalk
• There are three simple steps to sign up – create a BT ID, link to your home phone and then link to your mobile. You’ll need to be at home to register for it so you can link it to your home phone.
• The app automatically imports the contact list from your mobile.
• People will see your mobile number when you call them. You can also withhold your number if you’d prefer.
• The BT account holder is in charge. We’ll tell them about any new registrations. And they can manage their BT SmartTalk service online - including restricting the types of calls each user can make or even blocking new registrations - at bt.com/mybt/btsmarttalk
• BT SmartTalk is fully compatible with accessibility tools (to make it easier for the hard of hearing or visually impaired users to navigate).

“You’ll need a BT home calling plan and an iPhone / compatible Android smartphone with an internet connection. Maximum five users per account. SmartTalk allows you to access your calling plan on your smartphone. UK time zone applies. Opt-in for Premium (09) calls. Personal (070) calls excluded. Fair use policy applies. Excludes BT Basic. Just read all the comments and must admit I had a slight issue setting it up but just logged online and adjusted settings. The app is great. My boy lives in Ireland and I have discount via my landline so it's great that I can be out and about and still call him without worrying about paying international mobile calls fees. The app has got loads better and is far more stable than it initially was.

I thought they couldn't make anything worse than BT WiFi but I was wrong. Do not expect to be able go use this app if you swap from the original handset you had - it will not work. There is no option to select 'I changed my device'. You MUST go via the website and delete your ID which takes 24hrs. Then you need to start over with activation process. This means being at home because they use your landline for authentication codes. So if you are on holiday you are stuffed. Well done BT.

Cannot end calls as screen goes grey. Have looked on forums for a solution and not even BT have replied on their own website. I have to go into app programme and tap force stop. Great idea but poor App. BT sort it out!!! Update: 30/09/16 Nothing has changed. If you use your phone to ring a company that has an automated service, the screen is blank so you cannot make a selection. What a load of pony. Great idea poor service.

Firstly it wouldn't sync with my home phone for reasons which were not listed in the FAQ so I had to uninstall it and try again with another number as I have two landlines. Other people mostly won't have two numbers so will get no further. But it ruined my mobile. The app wouldn't close without using "force stop" and even then it slowed everything to a crawl. I have uninstalled it. What a heap of ****

by Z####:

This is a brilliant idea, and could be a fabulous App, but it does depend on the quality of your internet coverage... and unfortunately in rural areas broadband connections are still fairly poor. Nevertheless, as my mobile provider has an even WORSE coverage it's a lot better than nothing!!!

I've tried to set this up several times. I eventually received a pin via my home number and now it says it still won't work. Really can't be bothered now. This is a poorly thought out application. BT must try harder!

Phone networks down. Can't call out.. now I can I just connect to Wi Fi in that area n make a call. Brilliant no more driving all over looking for a signal. Not mobile friendly in my town. So is useful for me. Be good for people on pay as you go. When out of credit

I have spent a month trying to get this registered. Round and round the BT merry go round. 4 fault reports in one month and Zero results. They even offered me a help line tel no which would only cost ME a nominal sum. Poor

Z70%
by Z####:

PAYG costs can be crippling but I find a bit spot and my calls are free as part of my home calling package. There. I never thought I'd be saying something positive about BT!

Easy to set up and link to house phone etc, says ready to use. But every time I use it the person on the other end says I'm really quiet and can't hear me. There is no option to turn up the volume of my own voice. It's not an issue of connection (I'm standing right next to my BT hub at home and I have 76mb infinity 2 which is currently working fine), and it's not that the app doesn't have the necessary permissions to the microphone because I've checked and it does. Shame because it's a great idea.

Used to be great. Changed my phone and I can't connect. Keeps telling me that I am already connected!! Spoken to 4 people so far and all say it will be sorted. Could take 48 hours. Same as other comments before. Come on BT sort it out.

It used to work. Now, having reinstalled several times, with BT confirmation , every time I try to use it .. I get the screen notification 'Unfortunately BT Smart Talk has stopped'. This is also the case with my wife's Smart Talk

Call quality is very good Nb when it works! Often crashes especially when I go to make the next call, plus often turns my loudspeaker on without my request or knowledge (no warning light) just too many glitches for 4 stars so 3 star for me

Z70%
by Z####:

Good app but if you get a new phone and forget to deactivate before trying to setup on a new phone it is impossible to do. I understand security but this is over the top. Need a way to fix this problem even with lots of security questions would help.

After about 10 hours of messing since November 4th it finally sprung to life. Dealing with BT technical is like dealing with the Chuckle Brothers. They pass you from pillar to post because they haven't a clue! Furthermore they're not to cutting you off after they've scratched their heads for a bit! One star for the app and minus four for the support.

I've been using this app since 2014; must say it's getting better and better by the day. Well done BT! Now I can rely on it to save me some money on landline calls. :-)

This is app is great for when you are out & about and want to make a call linking to your home account bill over the net on wifi hotspots. Only one small point, my volume has to be quite low so the person you have called dose not get echo and able to hear everything they have just said in there own phone.

Signed up to BT as their promise of a multi faceted service appealed. Just arrived in Austria and this App is saying 'not ready'; the only suggestion customer service can make is uninstall and reinstall; done that, still 'not ready'

I remember using this ages ago on an old phone. Now despite requesting my account is reset twice so I can use my new phone I can't use it. Sort it out. Update: 3 attempts to register my new phone, still says the old phone is in use.

I had a problem with this app on a previous phone, but since upgrading to one with more memory it works fine. Used it to phone my bank in UK from Kathmandu - 45 minute call cost nothing as we have an inclusive land line contract.

Wish I could give it zero. Very good app if you want to waste a morning. My wifes mobile provider is BT also. Download app and then open it. Get asked to create an id. Try to but it won't let me complete it as final part of page is greyed out. This was 0900 hrs it is now 1157. I phoned BT, stayed in the queue for calls and then spoke to someone with my problem. I'll speak to someone I was told. Person comes back. You have the wrong department I'll transfer you - phone goes dead with buzzing sound. Create id on BT website. Open app and enter id and told that this id is being used by another phone. THERE IS NO OTHER PHONE. Phone again, same result - wrong department we'll transfer you. Again phone goes dead. Try again and also mention my wife had tried to phone and text out from Switzerland and Italy last week and couldn't saying we were not covered. Answer not our problem, this is a provider problem, who is your provider? BT. Ah. You have the wrong department - try billing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get through to them after the usual long wait and am told to go to another department. At this time I gave up.

Pretty poor customer experience. My old phone is registered to the service. Tried deleting the device using a PC, only way to do it. But this doesn't work. Never gets deleted. BT, this is 2017, we shouldn't have to wait for overnight batches to run. It should just recognise that you want to add a device with the same phone number and just replace it. The whole experience is just clunky and poor. Deleting.

I have been trying for two weeks to get BT ST working as I have changed my mobile phone I have uninstalled the App and reinstalled it various times all to no avail. I have been on My BT page and deleted the original mobile also various times I have had FOUR letters from BT telling me that my phone is now connected All I keep getting on my mobile is 'Sorry its taking a bit longer than expected to set things up' I have been on the phone for 3 hrs over the last two weeks people say that they will phone me back within 48 hrs and don't, so now I am at the end of my tether. This APP worked perfectly well with my older Mobile

Loved Smart Talk on my previous Galaxy but just can't get it to work on my new phone. Repeated error messages but no-one at the call centre can help other than suggesting a reinstall. Done this 6 times without success. One rep said he would delete ST from myBT account then all would be fine after 24 hours. Ineffective rubbish! Why can BTnot help me. Currently waiting for another call back from the 0800 number - not holding my breath. Should give this version a 0 review. What a real shame!!! Adrian.

The app is good once you set it up. Setting up the app is pretty complicated. If you have any issue with the app. Reinstalling is a big challenge.

It did work, on one device but now I can't even get it to set up. I was supposed to get a call back on the 21st of September. It's now the 23rd and nothing. I honestly wouldn't bother. To answer the question below, yes I am trying to set it up on a new device. I've tried replying to the email you sent but it was bounced back. Got a call back telling me the problem had been resolved. Utter crap. It still won't finish the set up. Can't reply to email, ever, and can't connect to either link in latest reply.

Minor bugs like can't immediately backspace to delete mistyped number and starts defaulted to speakerphone but otherwise good. 1mb per sec connection doesn't provide perfect service.

I have BT home phone but also have BT mobile. Mobile coverage in my apartment is terrible...but its more beneficial to me to use my mobile minutes than my landline. When is BT going to develop an app that lets BT mobile customers use their minutes and texts over their wifi connection? Like Three's customers have the 'Three in touch' app???....................I've noticed since posting this I've had no response from anyone at BT. More terrible customer service from BT. Time to Switch providers...

Ideal when Wi-Fi is available in a place that you can not get a decent 2G voice call connection from. Also saves phone minutes. I used it while in hospital for both those reasons.

This is a good app when it works however I changed my phone and went through the process of installing. Had to change my sim as the new phone needed the micro SIM. Spent an hour on the phone with BT and they kept saying my case has be upgraded to the smarttalk team and someboby will call me back. Have heard from them. This has happened twice and still have not had a call. Very very poor service.

Call quality seems better than the landline. Only one main issue is that screen goes blank (well grey) with proximity sensor but doesn't turn off.

When it works it's great, however I find that if it im on mute and leave the app to go to another app I find the app has unmuted me without my knowledge. I am also finding that the signal has dropped out on a number of occasions kickkng me out my call even though my WiFi signal is full and I get 50mbps download

S70%
by S####:

Call quality is pretty bad. BT have their codec/compression settings set VERY badly. The sound will often cut out because the volume is considered backround noise, the lowest volume threshold needs setting lower. The bitrate of calls is also unacceptably too low and makes understanding people very hard. In short, quality due to BTs settings are too poor to make this worth using. Thanks for the reply but myopinion that BT needs to increase quality still stands. Im using the highest grade connection that BT themselves offer so if theres internet problems then that again would be a problem BT would need to address, however, VOIP is MUCH better with other software for me, and my system uses professional audio hardware so im sure this is not my hardware or setup in any way. I work with audio for a living and have experience in this field. Also, MOS scores are subjective scores which i find are extremely inaccurate. Thanks for the reply, but im afraid smart talk has the worst quality VOIP ive used still, which is a shame as the idea for it is fantastic.

For those with limited minutes on mobile contract, this is a good app to put your phone calls through your BT home number/bill - I have free calls through BT (I pay set fee although I pay for calls to mobile numbers cheap rate) anyway so effectively free UK landline calls through mobile!

Uses your phone book and if you have WiFi you can phone people. Perfect of you are out of mobile signal or want to save money
