This is a great app for learning Japanese, it makes the grammar so easy to understand compared to other approaches I have tried. I wish there was a better way to practise the vocab we have learnt throughout and some way to sync across devices (or even just transfer from phone to tablet). I look at them once and then there is a quiz, it's not enough and I'm using other apps to help me remember words and Kanji. Those other apps are nothing without this though. Add some way to practise vocab and a sync function and I'll give you 5 stars.

"Shut up and take my money!" I started with the free version of this app, and decided to buy the full version before I was even halfway through the trial because I was enjoying the learning process so much. The tone is casual, conversational, and at times humorous, and the lessons are informative, varied, and interesting. Like anything, if you are willing to put in the time and effort to practice you should get results. I am not fast (and frequently don't understand the words yet), but at lesson 10 I can already read and write hiragana and some katakana.

Only one problem. My only issue with this app is you have to start all over after upgrading. I can't bring myself to take all the tests and quizzes again. It's like watching the same movie twice. I know lots of people do, but I just can't. I liked how it was made into a game with a score. I worked hard in the lite version to get a perfect score, and now I have to do it all again? I work full time and go to school full time. I just cannot bring myself to use my spare time to repeat it all again.

I just finished this app. It's really great, I'm going to purchase the intermediate. This app will give you the knowledge of how Japanese is structured, and I think this is a really good way to start. When I watch videos in Japanese I'm now able to understand which tenses are used, what are the adjectives and adverbs... I can honestly say that once you know how to form sentences, you only need one thing... vocabulary (along with kanjis in this case) and of course time. I definitely recommend this app.

This app has taught me so much in 3 weeks and I've only finished half of it so far. There is a minor issue I have with the Vocabulary and Numbers Quiz section of the app, though. For example, say I want to get quizzed on vocabulary words from lessons 1-10. I select lesson 10 and include all lessons before it. When taking the quiz though, most of the vocabulary words that come out are from lesson 10, and that the selection chances from each lesson isn't evenly distributed. It'd be great if this got fixed

Very helpful, definitely worth the money. The UI is great. All the lessons are explained really well. It made learning Japanese much less intimidating. As soon as I finished, I bought Human Japanese Intermediate and it's amazing too. The only thing stopping me from giving 5 stars is that I can't save the apps to my SD card. These are BIG apps and it's frustrating that they have to take up so much of my limited internal storage.

Only thing is that I started with HJ light and upgraded so now I have 2 apps but my progress isn't carried over Edit: But that's absolutely fine. This app is fantastic at teaching the language. I can progress in it whenever it's convenient to me and I feel like I'm learning something new throughout the whole thing and the quizzes are really helpful.

I am using several apps and podcasts and this method helps me more than any of the others. To see, hear, and then practice with the quizzes it really helps to retsin the material. The only thing I don't like in the app is it can be hard to return to material if you don't remember where it is. The bookmarks help with this but only if you are proactive about marking areas.

Y70%
by Y####:

I tried several apps before this on but they were either for just pronunciation or writing syllables or grammer ect. This has everything and it starts you at the very beginning with the history of the language and then the basic. It assumes you know nothing about the language and it's great. You don't have time to ask questions because everything is explained along the way.I've learned so much and I'm only just finishing the first lesson and it goes at a pace that isn't overwhelming.

I honestly have recommended this app to so many friends that I can't even keep track who I recommended it to anymore. I've had this app for a while and I didn't even finish the trial version before I bought this. It took me 2 days to learn all of Hiragana and this is the app I made the most progress with. I recommend this for anyone learning Japanese. It's truly an amazing app!

H70%
by H####:

Greatest thing is that it eases you into Japanese, instead of showing "gibberish" kanji, and hiragana-katakana before you even know them like they do in most books. This actually teaches you before and then uses examples. Everything's really great about the app. It explains things actually, unlike other learning softwares or apps. Also uses many examples. Some chapters are really heavy on vocabulary and long, but you can always go back and review everything, or do vocabulary quizzes.

Textbooks are hard to understand but this app breaks down grammar in an easy way, introduces loads of vocabulary, and teaches stroke order and pronunciation. It also gives lots of cultural information. I don't even use my textbooks anymore. This app is so much better! My only complaint is that there is no separate section that compiles all vocabulary from the reading. Others mention having to start over when purchasing the full app-- just turn off chapter locking in your app settings and then you can freely roam. Otherwise, worth every penny!

Heard about this app on Reddit and I have to say, it is one of the best language learning apps I have ever used! I've been learning Chinese and Spanish and all of the apps for those languages really fall short of Human Japanese. Keep up the good work guys and I can't wait to start the intermediate course!

Y70%
by Y####:

Holy crap! I am so tired of starting over! Please unlock the levels and make it stop! I love this app, but I don't have much time for it, so every other time I open it, it has to redownload everything and I have to start from the beginningf

On one hand, this has some of the best explenations I've seen so far. On the other hand, the order of learning grammar and vocab is very strange, and it is rather incomplete. I think this app and it's sequel are a great starting point , but even if the sequel is called ''intermediate'', that is almost a lie, it's still basic.

I got through a few chapters just fine. But now the chapter review and quiz buttons don't function.

Best. Thing. Everrrrr. For those of you who are hesitant to pay the ten dollars: just. Do it. These people worked hard and know their stuff and it SHOWS! This thing should cost like 25 bucks, but no, they care about you,so its just 10. Also, is there any way to transfer my progress from one device to a different one? Got a new phone for Christmas and can't figure out how.

Y70%
by Y####:

Definitely worth the money. Really great explanation of the grammar and the usage of language, I love the tone. It's a bit difficult to learn the vocabulary, though, and the quizzes are a bit too easy, so I'm using other apps to help me learn the vocabulary. This app is definitely the best one though, as the others do not explain any underlying patterns and only rely on memorizing phrases. If I had to choose only one app I would choose this without one thought.

Apologies in advance for the wall of text, but Google Play reviews don't like paragraph breaks. Excellent app overall. The vocabulary and sentence structure bits are well done, being comprehensive as well as comprehensible. I can't comment much on the kana learning bits, as I'd learned kana before diving into the app, but they seem to cover everything. You'll probably want paper worksheets or another app to practice your writing, though. There are three ways in which I can see the app being improved. If the devs improve it in the first two ways I suggest, I'll add a star to my rating. First, a method for saving progress across devices would be ideal. Like many people, I use multiple devices, but there is no apparent way to move progress stats between them. Either a cloud save option or ability to export/import progress would work. Second, please support portrait mode. Landscape mode is fine for tablets, but when I'm using the app on the go, such as on public transit, it's inconvenient to use it two-handed. Lastly, and this is a minor issue that doesn't affect my rating, please support the Samsung multi-window mode if possible.

I just bought this but it keeps telling me my copy of HJ has yet to be verified. Update - I ended up resetting my Nexus 7 (2013) and it verified immediately. Not sure what went wrong but glad I got it working. I'm gonna go ahead and dock a star until I've had some time to use the app.

This is my favourite app yet in learning a language, for it makes it absolutely fun. I give it 5 stars, however with the note that you cannot really learn vocabulary with this app for it doesn't provide enough training. Therefore it's best to combine this app with other apps that do focus on vocabulary! If I had to give one tip, or actually a wish, it is that a SRS system is added to the app for vocabulary training. Other than that, it's perfect.

The info is great, but now each time I start the app, it asks me to DL the extra stuff. (You know the one time DL stuff?) I've done of 3 times now. Today I am out without WiFi and this damn app asks me to DL it yet again. Not cool.

I like the UI. Helpful & intuitive. The explanations in the program itself are not too lengthy as to become boring. You may actually learn something. YMMV It'd be nice to be able to sync between devices and not have to repeat chapters.

Just starting out, I have a lot of apps to help me learn Japanese. But Human Japanese is the at the middle of everything I'm doing, because right from the introduction I knew that it wasn't just going to throw words and phrases at me and hope that I'd eventually get it, but it was going to take its time to explain why things are like they are, and get into the guts of the language. Vocabulary is important, and so far HJ has thrown a fair bit at me, but it's nothing if you're not learning the inner workings of a language such that you will be able to use it for your own needs. I like that HJ doesn't overwhelm with vocabulary, and switches up between learning words, grammar, cultural notes and other things so that you're never stuck on one thing for too long. That said, while HJ is at the middle of what I'm doing, I probably wouldn't recommend it on its own. It has a few games and quizzes to test your memory and speed at remembering things, but it's better at explaining than testing. So in order to memorise I supplement with other apps, flashcards and so on, and once I have more of the fundamentals I'm sure I will use other apps to expand my vocab too.

This app is great with breaking down the gammer of Japanese really well. It helps you understand easily what each particle of a sentence is and why it is used. I recommend using this app as a great way learning sentence structure and be one of your first tools to use with learning Japanese. With the chapter design, it allows beginners to easily tackle with jumping into studying another language with no problems.

Better than my community college Japanese teacher! I should have saved myself the stress and money and stuck with HJ, between this and Tae Kim I learned just as much with none of the abuse!

I completed the whole app just now and am mighty proud :P I feel like I can already express a lot of what I want to say. All the texts are easily understandable and the few lections about culture and more are very interesting and help relaxing between the grammar and vocab sessions. I definitely recommend this app!

This app teaches Japanese in a very inefficient manner. You'll think you're getting somewhere but be overwhelmed later by kanji and dictionary forms, which this app seemed to find too scary for dull beginners in the language.

I haven't used any other apps to learn Japanese, so I can't compare it to any others. But I have greatly enjoyed learning japanese with this app. The team behind the app is good too. I had a problem getting it to play on my tablet after it running well in the past. The support team responded quickly. Turns out Google play had issues. The only thing I would like to see changed about the app is more practice questions added. I'm the type where if I see a question a couple of times I remember it. More questions and a lot more practice would be great.

Before I got to this app, I tried at least 5 different apps to help me with my Japanese class. Some were pretty good and others; not so much. So I was a little skeptical going into this app but I was amazed at how easy and fun it made learning Japanese. As soon I reached the end of the lite version, I jumped on the chance to buy the full version. It's a little pricey but it's worth every penny spent and more.

This app is great. Before I started I couldn't read any Hiragana or Katakana and i knew a few phrases like konnichiwa and hajimimashite (as well as the general "my name is '...' what's your name?"). I can now read hiragana (slowly) and make sence of quite a few terms with the vocabulary. I really think I should go back through this a few times for it to really sink in though. There's a lot I have forgotten. TIP: when I did the quizzes I used text the first time and vocab on the second attempt.

This is a great app! Worth every penny. The layout is well designed--short chapters with quick quizzes so there is a real sense of accomplishment very quickly. The chapter quizzes are set up like games: you get experience points and can "level up". For me, this is what made everything click. Rote learning is important for language learning, but it can be so boring. But by linking the quizzes to "leveling up", I found myself saying "...hmmm, I only need 60 points to make the next level..." and thus getting the needed practice without it feeling like "studying". The author's tone is very warm and friendly. The experience feels more like studying with a very knowledgeable friend in a cafe rather than anonymously in a classroom.

I had originally been looking for apps to help me with my Japanese class when I came across this, I had previously seen bad apps but thought that since the reviews were so great it's worth my money and it definitely is. It has made learning Japanese such a fun and enjoyable experience. The author explains everything in a simple, clear and understandable way. I have gone from knowing nothing at all to gaining more knowledge than I ever thought I could. This is the best app for learning japanese ever!

When I started with the free version, I said that it was great. I bought it, I'm now at chapter 29 and I have to say it's the BEST app to learn japanese. Perfect balance between vocabulary and grammar. And the fact that we're not introduced to kanjis from the beginning is, to me, the best way to start learning this language, otherwise you're just overwhelmed.
