الاسم : فاطمة إبراهيم البلتاجي، ولدت على الأرجح في 4 أيار 1904، بقرية طماي الزهايرة بمركز السنبلاوين بمحافظة الدقهلية، كان والدها إماماً لمسجد محلي، ووالدتها كانت ربة بيت.

تعلمت أم كلثوم في "كتاب" القرية، أما الغناء فقد تعلمته من والدها، الذي كان يدرب شقيقها أصول الموسيقى والغناء، رغبة منه في مساعدته في الحفلات التي شكلت مصدر دخل أساسي للعائلة. ثم ما لبثت أن انضمت وهي طفلة صغيرة، إلى فرقة والدها، التي حظيت بشهرة واسعة، في الموالد والأفراح، خصوصاً بعد التحاق أم كلثوم.
ووافت المنية كوكب الشرق في الثالث من شباط/فبراير، وفي الخامس من الشهر ذاته، اكتظت شوارع القاهرة بملايين المشيعين الذين تبادلوا حمل النعش مدة ثلاث ساعات، وتوجهوا إلى مسجد "الحسين"، خلافاً لما كان مقرراً (مسجد عمر مكرم).
