About pianoREADER

pianoREADER is an android application designed to help self-taught pianists of ALL levels to read music notations more easily. Simply input music notations into this app and it will show you where they are on your keyboard. For how to use this app, go to the bottom of this description.

Key features:
• pianoREADER is used to "translate" music notations into piano key positions
• Change key signatures and clefs to match your score
• Adjust accidentals for individual notes (sharp, flat, natural, double-sharp, and double-flat)
• pianoREADER will display multiple notes on the music sheet, tap on them to "read" and/or edit
• Your screen will not timeout while using pianoREADER, so you don't have to keep turning it back on or change your phone's settings just for this app.
• Save and share your pianoREADER files (.pr) with others

This way of learning how to read music sheet requires memorization and a lot of practice. Since pianoREADER doesn’t integrate speed, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the tempo of the melody before trying to learn it. We will be adding more features to this app in the future. If you have any suggestions, please leave a comment to let us know.

Enjoy!

Simple steps to get you started:

1. Find a music sheet you'd like to read and open pianoREADER.

2. Choose a clef (tap on it to change from treble to bass and back).

3. Set the key signature (number of flats or sharps to the right of the clef).

4. Now that you have set up the basic info, save your progress!
- Go to the main menu, located on the upper right corner of your screen.
- Choose save, but first, create a new folder for pianoREADER if you haven't already.
- Important: You can only save either left or right hand for one file. So when you save, make sure you include "left" or "right" in the name for future reference. Continue saving and save often!

5. Once you've saved files for both left and right hands, you're ready to start adding notes.
- To add notes, tap the add button to the left. All new notes are set to appear at the middle C position.
- When a note is red, that means you can edit it.
- Move it up or down using the arrows located on the bottom right of your screen.
- If you see an accidental (sharp, flat, ...) before a note on your music sheet, highlight it for that note while the note is red.
- Tap the add button again to add more notes to that chord if needed.
- To delete a single note, tap and hold.

6. To add note(s) to pianoREADER's music sheet, tap the white check button.
- To delete notes from the sheet, tap and hold.
- To edit previously added notes, tap to highlight notes on the left to edit, then tap the white check button again.
- NOTE: If you are viewing or editing, make sure to cancel & resume before trying add new notes. Otherwise it will edit the notes you have selected.

7. Lastly, if you want to change the clefs and/or key signatures in the same staff, simply add a note with the new settings and it'll change for the new note(s).

This app is very helpful for people who barely know anything about pianos and sheet music, that person as in me. I never knew what the little symbols next to music notes meant, so I stuck with learning using Synthesia. With this app, I finally learned to make sense of these symbols and am slowly learning how to read the notes without the app itself! I've been having a lot of fun messing around with the built-in sounds, and I can't wait to try out this new editing feature. Now if you'll excuse me, I have Canon notes to finish adding.
