VocabPal has done it! In the 6.0.0 release, it is offering a word lookup service that users can use in any apps. You only need to long press and copy the word, if VocabPal found the word, a floating logo will appear. Clicking the logo will pop up the full definition of the word in swipe views! Now you can use VocabPal's powerful diction in any e-readers on your phone! Other recently added features are Words Quests search, anagrams, lexically and semantically linked words, in addition to the offline English dictionary based on WordNet 3.0 with save words, flashcards, import/export word lists features. The word definition screen includes links to Google Images, Wiktionary and web search of the word to enhance vocabulary building and memory forming. Except on clicking the links to web and Wiktionary, the app functions in completely offline mode after installing and downloading the dictionary database. The dictionary was built on WordNet 3.0 database, a lexical English dictionary database for the English language with thesaurus created by the Cognitive Science Laboratory of Princeton University. The SOWPODS dictionary words is introduced for the Words Quest and Anagrams search. On the Words Quest, user can search by words start with, end with, contain letters in words as well as in definitions and parts of speech and semantic domain, the cognitive category that human assigns words during mental processing. Now VocabPal can help you play Scrabble, Crosswords and your favorite word games! The Anagrams search and the domain filter in the Words Quest are features available only on the VocabPal app, NOT the VocabPal Free. Definitions of each word are grouped by parts of speech and semantic domain of each meaning, supplemented with morphs, sample sentences, synonyms and antonyms if applicable. Word pronunciation is provided via a text to speech button. The app makes it easy to check any word in the definition by prompting action menu that will take you straight to the definition of that word after a long press on the word of interest. On any mobile contents, the VocabPal Free search and definition intents can be accessed via sharing app list after long press on the word of interest.
The history of all checked words is presented in two modes, one in chronological order and the other ordered by frequency and chronological order. User can choose to save each word with custom notes into multiple word lists created by the user. This is a must have vocabulary app for English learners, writers, K-12 students, as well as general readers who would like to advance their vocabulary.
The flashcards feature turns all the word list with more than 2 words into flashcards. You can swipe manually as well as playing automatically. There are settings to control playing speed, repeat or not and whether to read out the words aloud. It is a great vocabulary enhancing tool for SAT, GRE, TOFEL...etc.
You can export word lists, backup/upload your word lists to server and import word lists that are shared with public or authenticated users.
