Note Trainer (Sight Reading) for Android
Great app for learning to recognise notes quickly without mnemonics. Any chance of a 3rd mode in future that has bass & treble at the same time? Also, slight bug: Highest C# doesn't make a sound (using Galaxy S5)
Excellent. After struggling with music notation for a while I discovered this app and a Google Chrome app, notation trainer. I purchased both... A tiny fraction of what I pay for my classes. And now... Finally am able to read and play the keyboards.
It's a great app if you've had a little training in what the lines in the notes or the symbols beside them means. If you haven't had any training you'll be pretty confused. Maybe in a future update, you could list what note it is asking you to play, like c sharp and what not. Honestly then it would be the perfect app for people who literally know nothing about sheet music.
You'd deserve 5 stars if you offered landscape mode and the choice of starting from a certain wave level. It's a little frustrating starting from wave 1 each time. But it's great to see the stats for each note.
Two problems. One: it takes too long to get to challenging levels. It should be able to begin at level 10, 30, 60, etc. Two: the app doesn't train second or third octave scales. Romantic era music lives in those very high and low octave notes.
Works well for people who want to excel at reading musical notes. It does take diligence to keep pushing those buttons though because after a while it can become a little bit boring. So push yourself!
Before I downloaded this app I had no idea how to read music haha. I started out just learning what keys were what notes and then I used the static flash cards to get the basics down. I slowly bumped up through the levels and what really stuck with me was level 9, the notes rush at you on a flurry and it forces you to instantly knkw the notes or you lose! It had a extremely positive result for me, and now I know how to read music!
Very nice app, after a week of use it has already helped me progress with my piano playing. There's room for improvements though, i.e. screen rotation, a starting wave (the first 10 waves are already too slow to be interesting). I'd recommend trying the lite version first, and if you enjoy it move to the full version for sharps/flats, and bass notes.
I've been struggling with learning the notes and recognizing them on sheet music and so far, this app has really helped a lot. I can read music more quickly and it gives me something to make use of the downtime I have on the bus and such. The game is simple, but can be a little bit addicting once you get the hang of it.
It's the software I've been looking for! You have no idea how easy it is to learn reading notes until you use this app. Tried the lite version for 30seconds and bought the $1 full version in the next. That's how much I love it. A few suggestions, MIDI support so I can use actual keyboard and learn where exactly is the damn things and maybe play an actual song from the app. Not that necessary, but nice to have. Thanks Dev!
Great game for beginners! It needs a harder mode to play though. Once you get a little better you can play the game for over 10 minutes before losing.
A great tool for staying on top of sight reading. The only thing I'd like to see improved would be the keyboard being longer to reflect more than one octave because it's a bit restrictive. Other than that, it's a really good app!
Very much like an addictive game... Visually it's quite basic i.e. There's no fanfare or sparkly colours when you get a note right or anything. This is probably the only area where this app could be improved on. It does the job though! We'll done! :-)
As it says, it will train you with notes, perfectly! It is the sole purpose of this app. Only after you master notes and keys, you can go any further, and that will be a piece of cake. This app got a absolute brilliant method to teach notes.
From the pictures I seen I thought I was going to get more advanced reading challenges. It's a good app, but it would be awesome if you can choose the key signature you're reading in, add accidentals, and be able to choose the tempo so that it can be more challenging. For anyone who is at the beginners level, I would say that it's a great app and for a dollar it cant be beat really.
Very good app. Lots of options, all levels and my favourite part is that it shows my accuracy of each note individually. I would like this app more if I could see more about my mistakes, for example if I can see that I keep on mixing 2 notes up, I could be aware.
I wish there is key signatures, or maybe a song mode. The game felt repetitive after a while, but does help me.
It took me about 10 minutes to learn to read in F-clef. I'm striving to learn to read fluently but if I keep this up, playing about 10 minutes a day I believe I soon will. The only thing I miss is a way to start at certain wave and not having to start from 1 every time.
Would like to be able to practice rhythms, not just notes. Also, I often intend to hit the correct note but the game doesn't read my touch accurately (one semitone off), although I admit I don't know if that's the fault of the app or my phone.
This app helps a beginner like me to sharpen my reading skills on the various notes, especially the ones above and below the ledger lines, plus it's very good at building speed recognition of the notes with each level increasingly more challenging
In just a week I've increased my note recognition speed about 5 times. Repetition is the key to retention. I do a few minutes here and there while I'm waiting in line or on lunch break. Get the upgrade, too. Can't go wrong for just a buck, plus the accidentals are not only essential, they make the training much more fun and exciting. I play on a Samsung S3, which is a bit small, but works fine. Looking forward to tying on a tablet.
I downloaded the free app and then purchased the full version coz this app improved my daughter's notes reading. There is one thing can be added. Now user can only select up to wave(speed) 9 in practice mode. After just about a week, my daughter can handle that with no problem, so a higher speed will be helpful with user skill development.
Great little app...doing it just 5 minutes a day consistently.. improves my sight reading next time I sit down to play and takes the 'pain' out of playing..making me want to do both more - this app & play ..it's become for me a fun simple effective app!
When it comes to learning how to play notes, my first go-to option is this app. Since I don't own a piano yet, and I have classes on them, I can practice my knowledge of the notes while I'm on the run and at home. It's a great app. Pick it up
On the positive, it is a stable and pretty app. However, it lacks several features to be useful: bigger touch areas, landscape mode, customizable note ranges. But the main weakness is that you cannot choose at what speed to start in play mode, and you have to start always at the lowest speed. This makes the app almost a one time only toy. Other apps are much less pretty, but at least they are useful in the long run.
This app is the best one I've come across for understanding sight reading hands down. I love how score is kept and helps build speed as well. The only thing that would make it more helpful would be if it allowed screen rotation or to be used long-ways on my device since I have pretty big hands and tend to hit some of the other notes on accident lol
The app is a good note recognition trainer; I'm not sure whether speed recognition works, as I have not put it inti practice. Landscape would be much better for the sake of the piano keys and accuracy. There are other issues, but this is not the place to air the matter.
This is a good one. There is time pressure to make you think quickly, note selection is easy, and there are stats on your ability for each note.
I just wish it included E and B sharps and F and C flats, since you're gonna run into them alot irl, would like to get conditioned to them. Also double flats and sharps and maybe a natural symbol when a note is a returned from flat or sharp in practice mode
Well made, excellent features. Performs as expected. I'd recommend this app to anyone who wants or needs to learn how to read music notes.
Does exactly what it should. A little practice everyday, and you'll be sight reading simple melodies in no time. It would be nice if it supported a landscape mode because the piano keys are awfully narrow.
My kids take piano lessons and needed to learn notes- this was a fun way to get note reading practice in. Was a nice refresher for me, too!
I'm amazed at how quickly I am learning how to sight read with this app. It's fun and challenging. I like being able to practice before playing the game. But I learn a lot from playing the game too. I also like to check out the stats and see which notes I need to focus on the most. I don't normally write reviews but this app was worth it.
I would just like to see more varied and fast paced slides
Although the layout of the app is a little pixilated, the purpose to learn music is completely apparent. This is a great app, and is totally worth the dollar you spend on it.
It helps a lot. But I just want to suggest a new feature to play with treble and bass at the same time instead of playing it one at a time. It'll surely help me and others to read the notes easily. And hopefully it'll have a landscape orientation feature since its hard hitting the keys mostly the sharps/flats.
If you have trouble spotting the notes without going through the alphabet, or using a point of reference this app will change that. I'm on it 10 minutes per day and I'm reaping the benefits. It could use a mode that allows for bass and treble practice at the same time to get the brain used to switching quickly.
So this does help me to cram those note values and I am glad I paid for it. After a while you start getting really good at it. Nevertheless I am not entirely convinced whether the acquired skills translate well to practice. First of all, usually you are required to read both clefs at once, not as neatly separated as in the app. So how about two rows, one with bass and one with treble? Next thing would be chords: Maybe you could throw two or more notes at me at once? Please consider! Thanks. :)
I really enjoy the way this method works. Be forewarned that I haven't seen the ledger lines beyond 2 off the scales (personally I enjoy 3). Two cons, you can't really start at a faster speed. For those of us who can sight read a little quicker it can be tedious to start. Secondly, I wish they had an option that included both scales at the same time. Right now, they don't. Overall I think it's a great way to practice! Def. Worth the buck
