Sejarah
Proyek penerjemahan Terjemahan Baru bahasa Indonesia ini dimulai oleh Lembaga Alkitab Belanda (NBG) pada tahun 1952, karena sebelum proklamasi kemerdekaan Indonesia kegiatan-kegiatan penerjemahan dan penyebaran Alkitab di Indonesia ditangani oleh Lembaga Alkitab Belanda dan Inggris (British and Foreign Bible Society). Dengan berdirinya Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia yang mandiri pada tanggal 9 Februari 1954, maka tanggung jawab proyek ini diserahkan kepada LAI pada tahun 1959.
Panitia penerjemahannya terdiri dari tenaga-tenaga ahli berasal dari Belanda, Swiss dan Indonesia (dari suku Tapanuli, Jawa, Minahasa, dan Timor). Turut membantu dalam proyek penerjemahan ini antara lain adalah J.W. Saragih dan P.S. Naipospos. Penerjemahan TB dilakukan langsung dari bahasa aslinya, yaitu bahasa Ibrani versi Biblia Hebraica Kittel (Perjanjian Lama) dan bahasa Yunani versi Nestle Aland (Perjanjian Baru).
Edisi percobaan karya panitia ini diterbitkan secara bertahan mulai tahun 1959, berbentuk beberapa kitab dalam ukuran saku. Akhirnya setelah dua kali tertunda, proyek penerjemahan ini diselesaikan pada tahun 1970 dan Perjanjian Barunya diterbitkan pada tahun 1971, Perjanjian Lamanya pada tahun 1974.
Karena memang baru, maka terbitan itu dinamakan TERJEMAHAN BARU, singkatnya TB, sedangkan terjemahan Alkitab versi Bode-Klinkert yang lebih lama tadi dengan sendirinya disebut sebagai Terjemahan Lama. Jadi, singkatan TB mengacu kepada terjemahan Alkitab yang dibuat oleh Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia dan yang beredar sejak tahun 1975 sampai sekarang. Terjemahan bernama TB itu "formal", bahkan boleh disebut "harfiah", sebab bertujuan mempertahankan sejauh mungkin bentuk asli teks Kitab Suci. Akibatnya, terjemahan itu agak kaku dan tidak selalu mudah dipahami, walaupun cukup sesuai buat studi.
Selama rentang waktu ketika Perjanjian Lama dan Perjanjian Baru diterbitkan, terdapat sebuah terjemahan Perjanjian Baru lain yang diterbitkan di Indonesia, bukan oleh LAI, yaitu Perjanjian Baru Bouma, sedangkan proyek penerjemahan Perjanjian Lama Groenen tidak berhasil diselesaikan. History
New translations project was initiated by the Indonesian Bible Society Netherlands (NBG) in 1952, since before Indonesia's independence proclamation activities of Bible translation and distribution in Indonesia is handled by the Dutch and British Bible Society (British and Foreign Bible Society). With the establishment of an independent Indonesian Bible Society on February 9, 1954, it is the responsibility of the project is handed over to LAI in 1959.
Translation committee composed of experts from the Netherlands, Switzerland and Indonesia (from the tribe of Tapanuli, Java, Minahasa, and Timor). Helped in the translation project, these include the J.W. Saragih and P.S. Naipospos. TB translation is done directly from the original languages, namely Hebrew version of Biblia Hebraica Kittel (Old Testament) and Greek versions of Nestle Aland (New Testament).
Trial edition of this committee's work published last start of 1959, the form of several books in pocket size. Finally, after two postponements, the translation project was completed in 1970 and published his New Testament in 1971, the entire Old Testament in 1974.
Because it is new, the NEW TRANSLATION publication was called, in short TB, while the translation of the Bible-Klinkert Bode longer had itself referred to as the Old Translation. Thus, the abbreviation TB refers to the translation of the Bible made by Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia and circulated since 1975 until now. Translation named TB was "formal", even be called "literal", because it aims to maintain as far as possible the original shape of the text of Scripture. Consequently, the translation was a bit stiff and not always easy to understand, although it is quite appropriate for the study.
Over the span when the Old Testament and the New Testament was published, there is a translation of the New Testament published in Indonesia, not by LAI, namely the New Testament Bouma, while the Old Testament translation project Groenen is not successfully completed.
