Οι Μάρτυρες του Ιεχωβά, αναγνωρίζοντας το πολύτιμο έργο πολλών ετερόδοξών τους λογίων, χρησιμοποιούν στα έντυπα και στη μελέτη τους δεκάδες αναγνωρισμένες μεταφράσεις από όλο το φάσμα του χριστιανικού κόσμου, και μάλιστα κάποιες από αυτές τις εξέδωσαν και τις προώθησαν μέσω της Εταιρίας Σκοπιά. Στην Ελλάδα, για παράδειγμα, οι περισσότεροι Μάρτυρες του Ιεχωβά γαλουχήθηκαν πνευματικά κυρίως με τη Νεοελληνική Μετάφραση (περ. 1850) του αρχιμανδρίτη Νεoφύτου Βάμβα, αλλά και με την Καινή Διαθήκη των Τεσσάρων Καθηγητών (1967) της Θεολογικής Σχολής του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών.

Εντούτοις, επειδή α) έχει σημειωθεί πρόοδος στην ανεύρεση παλαιών χειρογράφων που βελτιώνουν την εικόνα για το γνήσιο κείμενο της Γραφής, β) έχει αυξηθεί η κατανόηση γύρω από τις βιβλικές γλώσσες και γ) όπως είναι φυσιολογικό, οι σύγχρονες γλώσσες συνεχίζουν να εξελίσσονται, η μετάφραση της Βίβλου δεν παύει να αποτελεί ανάγκη. Επιπρόσθετα, οι Μάρτυρες του Ιεχωβά θεώρησαν ότι οι υπάρχουσες μεταφράσεις της Βίβλου, σε μικρό ή μεγαλύτερο βαθμό, είναι επηρεασμένες από θρησκευτικές παραδόσεις όπως αυτές διαμορφώθηκαν αρκετά μετά την ολοκλήρωση της συγγραφής της Αγίας Γραφής. Το πιο χαρακτηριστικό έρεισμα αυτής της θεώρησης είναι το ότι οι περισσότερες μεταφράσεις δεν αναφέρουν καθόλου το προσωπικό όνομα του Θεού, δηλαδή Ιεχωβά ή Γιαχβέ, το οποίο τεκμηριωμένα απαντά περίπου 7.000 φορές στα αρχαία κείμενα της Γραφής. Όλοι αυτοί οι λόγοι ώθησαν τον τότε πρόεδρο της Εταιρίας Σκοπιά Νάθαν Νορ να αναθέσει σε μια επιτροπή την εκπόνηση μιας νέας μετάφρασης της Αγίας Γραφής.

Πρώτα άρχισαν οι εργασίες για τη μετάφραση των Χριστιανικών Ελληνικών Γραφών (Καινή Διαθήκη) στα Αγγλικά, οι οποίες διήρκεσαν από τον Δεκέμβριο του 1947 μέχρι τον Σεπτέμβριο του 1949. Η μετάφραση αυτή εκδόθηκε το 1950, ενώ ταυτόχρονα είχαν αρχίσει οι εργασίες για την απόδοση των Εβραϊκών Γραφών (Παλαιά Διαθήκη) στα Αγγλικά. Αυτές αρχικά κυκλοφόρησαν τμηματικά, αλλά το 1960 παρουσιάστηκε η μονότομη έκδοση όλου του έργου. Jehovah's Witnesses, acknowledging the valuable work of many heterodox scholars, using the forms and in their study dozens recognized translations of the entire spectrum of the Christian world, and even some of these adopted and promoted by the Watchtower Society. In Greece, for example, most of Jehovah's Witnesses spiritually nurtured mainly in the Modern Translation (c. 1850) by Archimandrite Neofytou Vamva, but also to the New Testament of the Four Teachers (1967) of the Theological School of Athens.

However, because a) there has been progress in finding old manuscripts that improve picture Bible genuine text, b) have a better understanding about the biblical languages ​​and c) as is normal, modern languages ​​continue to evolve, translation Bible no longer a necessity. Additionally, Jehovah's Witnesses felt that the existing translations of the Bible, to one extent or another, influenced by religious traditions as they were formed long after the completion of writing of the Bible. The most typical basis of this visa is that most translations are not at all mentioned the personal name of God, that Jehovah or Yahweh, which documented replies about 7,000 times in ancient Bible texts. All these reasons prompted the then President of the Watchtower Nathan Homer Knorr Company to appoint a committee to prepare a new translation of the Bible.

The translation was published in 1950, while they had begun work on the return of Jewish Scriptures (Old Testament) in English.
