Introduction To Fashion Revamping
Ways to Update Your Wardrobe
With regard to clothes, there are a few ways of transforming them into fresh, new creations:
- Reconstruction: You can take an item of clothing apart completely at the seams and build something new from the pieces, or you can use the deconstructed pieces to re-make that item of clothing in another/a different fabric (if you particularly like the fit or style of it). You can also change one type of clothing into another, e.g. you can change a large man's shirt into a dress, or you could re-size it to fit yourself. If you have found a skirt that is made in a really cool material but it is far too big for you, you could also alter it to fit you perfectly. Old t-shirts or sweaters (especially if they have holes in or stains on) are ideal for cutting up and using as embellishments, or sewing together to make something else - such as a sweater skirt, or a t-shirt dress. Reconstruction usually entails at least a low level of sewing skill.
- Deconstruction: Scissors can cut the legs off jeans to make shorts, and can create all kinds of decorative slits and cuts in clothing. There are some really artistic ways to cut and manipulate t-shirts to make eye-catching designs, including skeleton images and fringing.
- Embellishing: This is the most popular method of revamping clothes, with possibilities including: printing paint patterns onto jeans, gluing on fabric flowers, sewing on ruffles and embroidering patterns.
With regard to non-clothing items such as bags and shoes, the usual way of updating them is to dye them another color or to embellish them, often by painting or drawing onto them. I hope you find plenty of project suggestions on this page to interest you :)
A fabulous handbag can spruce up any outfit, but match it up with other bags you may also need to carry. This means you should have a matched set of a briefcase and purse if you carry them both at the same time. If you ever carry three or more bags, make sure that they are not more than two different kinds of bags.
Clean out your closet. While it can seem like more clothing means more options, the opposite is true. A cramped and cluttered closet will only hinder your fashion choices. Go through your wardrobe and get rid of anything that doesn't fit you well or you haven't worn recently. A wardrobe comprised of a few classic, versatile pieces will be more wearable than a closet full of outdated styles.
The color combination of black and white has become in season once again. Many runway outfits are using this combination. You don't have to make black and white the primary colors either. You can accessorize using black and white accents. These colors will go with anything that you're wearing, no matter how plain or how ornate. There literally is no end to the possibilities when combining black and white items together.
Perfection is almost impossible with a subject like fashion. It is nearly impossible to do. Also, if you attempt perfection, you may look like you are investing too much time and effort into the process. Amazing and memorable styles have come from models and celebrities who purposely leave something that isn't finished, such as wearing a messy ponytail or a bedhead look.
