About Flight Instruments

Gyro Attitude Indicator and other key flight instruments on your Android.

Key features:
-Gyro Attitude Indicator, with auto-calibration and auto-leveling. For devices without gyro sensors, attitude is derived from GPS. Indicator shows extreme attitude chevrons to guide you back to a safety if you find yourself in an unusual attitude
-"Glass cockpit" Primary Flight Display using digital tapes for Speed, Altitude, Heading, Vertical Speed and Rate of Turn
-Position relative to nearest airport in plain English (convenient for ATC position reports), with a global database of 23,000 airports, including tower frequencies
-Automatic Flight Timer
-Fully configurable display, in portrait and landscape mode
-Choice of imperial or metric units

Provides pilots with a backup for their artificial horizon, airspeed indicator, altimeter and compass on a modern PFD.

Continuous Adaptive Auto-Calibration adjusts the gyro for sensor drift as a result of temperature, engine vibration and sensor errors, and a Kalman filter combines input from multiple sensors for better attitude stability.

For correct indication, the device needs to be placed vertical, with the screen facing the pilot, but aligned with the axis of flight (i.e., not rotated for better viewing). Level the attitude indicator by tapping the center at any time.

If desired, choose 'Use GPS for attitude' to force GPS-derived attitude indication (ignoring gyro sensors).

NOTES:
Sensors are optimized for use in flight, and will show dip and bank at slow speeds (eg in a car).

Upon start-up, the tapes will show red X marks to indicate that no reliable GPS signal is available. Once a reliable GPS signal has been captured, speed and altitude tapes will show. If attitude is derived from GPS, the attitude indicator and heading tape will show once moving at a speed of greater than 10 kts. A reliable GPS signal may not be possible indoors.

The frequency of GPS updates varies considerably between devices. The age of the last GPS fix is shown when >3s, to warn that the GPS data is old. All indications are not reliable when the GPS data is old.

Air data is derived from GPS, and therefore only an approximation of actual air speed, altitude and heading (and attitude for devices without gyro sensors). Do not use for primary navigation or attitude reference. You assume total responsibility and risk associated with this application.

Most devices have accelerometer sensors, but this is not the same as gyro sensors. Gyro attitude is only possible with gyro sensors, so please check your device documentation to confirm you have gyro sensors. If not, Flight Instruments will derived attitude information from the GPS, which is still very useful in flight, but not as smooth and accurate as gyro indication.

Initially looks quite good on the ground... But take to the air after having put my HTC Desire into 'Airplane mode' - to comply with flight regulations your application which once worked perfectly on the ground now tells you it is 'unlicensed for this device' and promptly closes when you hit 'ok'... So if you have any intention of using this in the air - for fun purposes - think again it does not work thanks to this rather major licensing restriction! Update May 2017 - it is slightly better, you can now launch it 3 or 4 times but as the licensing has no internet connection (usual if flying!) - it will then switch to unlicensed and you cannot run it anymore - until you have landed and have internet again.. It has been this way for many years now so I guess the author is in no hurry to fix this rather fundamental issue!

This app has worked well on my Samsung Note 4, but crashes on opening on my new Google Pixel C running Android 6.0.1. It seems the new Android is giving it problems.

I have tried a few of these and most are useless but I flew today with this app using a Nexus 7( in VFC conditions) and it appears to work very well. Both Pitch and Roll are responsive . Accurately represented my pitch and roll and orientation for over 30 mins of testing. Bert Barrott

GPS Info very good, heading, alt, AS. Pitch - about 4 , Roll - 3 at best (all over the place) Like the airport frequency at the bottom of page

Have used this app twice in a single engine cessna. Provides great back up attitude situational awareness. My player does not have gyro sensors so all information was derived from GPS. Airspeed seemed to match the aircrafts speed, the heading was usually off 4 to 5 degrees (still acceptable) and altitude was off by 100 feet because device does not have barometric altimeter. The attitude indicator was a little jumpy at times and would settle after a second or two. The only reason I gave this 4 stars is because I used the device in horizontal position. After further research, the app clearly states the device should be in the vertical position. I also rread where you can drag the altitude on the device to match the aircrafts altitude once you are stable in flight. I will be further testing this app in in correct position, and for the price, even if the above squawks remain the same when the device is in its correct position, I think it is still a very handy tool!

I am writing this prior to testing in A/C but as a flight instructor and instrument rated pilot I find this potentially very handy in case of emergency. I am very curious to try it out in my friends Cirrus 22. I'll have a good laugh if it let's me fly it just as well as the thousands of dollars worth of avionic he has. I don't quite understand the reason for offering the "In Flight" app (with many more features) as this one though. Had I know, I would have bought the more feature rich app. Suggest you do the same (unless I am missing something???)

For years general aviation pilots have paid $1000+ for GPS handhelds with an emergency panel page, "just in case" of losing gyro instruments. On the Nexus7, this app appears to provide all the critical information necessary to maintain control and locate the nearest public airport. Showing the airport's comm frequency is a nice touch (since in an emergency you won't want to switch back to a mapping program to search it out). The tablet should be aligned with the aircraft and firmly mounted. The startup screen suggests 1 minute to stabilize, so you should have this running and set in level flight before you need it. Switching back and forth to a map program didn't seem to lose calibration either. But even if you don't have it running all the time, for most gyro or vacuum pump-induced instrument failures, there is plenty of time to bring it up and get it stabilized. I look forward to test-flying it soon in my 177RG.

Tested the app practicing Lazy 8's with an instructor on Monday in Southern Florida. Was using a Samsung Galaxy S II which has an internal gyro. Found the app to match the Cessna 172 attitude indicator and directional gyro and turn rate quite accurately while in the maneuvers. The phone was in the vertical position like the recommendation. Distance from the airport matched the Garmin. The instructor and I were stunned. It was like a little flight information system on my telephone. If your VFR in the clouds in a simple airplane this could get your out. Very cool. Unbeatable for the price.
