Για πρώτη φορά στην ελληνική γλώσσα. H κυρία Γιάννα Πρίμπα μεταφέρει στη γλώσσα μας το έργο “Η κραυγή των παιδιών”, Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1841) από τις ηλ. εκδόσεις 24grammata.com (σειρά εν καινώ).

Η Elizabeth Barrett Browning ήταν μία από τις σημαντικότερες Βρετανίδες ποιήτριες της Βικτωριανής εποχής. Γεννήθηκε στις 6 Μαρτίου του 1806 στο Cohnadatia Hall, κοντά στο Durham. Ήταν κόρη του Edward Barrett Moulton Barrett, ιδιοκτήτη φυτείας στην Τζαμάικα, και της Mary Graham-Clarke, η οποία καταγόταν από πλούσια οικογένεια του Newcastle και ήταν το μεγαλύτερο από τα δώδεκα παιδιά τους. Ο πατέρας της επέλεξε να μεγαλώσει τα παιδιά του στην Αγγλία και όχι στην Τζαμάικα όπου είχε τα οικονομικά του συμφέροντα. Η βιογράφος Julia Markus αναφέρει ότι η Elizabeth Barrett Browning θεωρούσε ότι είχε και αφρικανικές ρίζες από τον παππού της Charles Moulton. Άρχισε να ασχολείται με την ποίηση ενώ ήταν ακόμη παιδί. Ο πατέρας της μάλιστα φρόντισε, το 1820, να εκδοθεί σε πενήντα αντίτυπα ένα επικό ποίημά της σχετικά με τη μάχη του Μαραθώνα. Για κορίτσι της εποχής εκείνης ήταν πολύ μορφωμένη και εκπαιδεύτηκε στο σπίτι της. Είχε πολύ καλή γνώση της Ελληνικής γλώσσας. Στα εφηβικά της χρόνια, αντιμετώπισε προβλήματα υγείας και πιθανότατα έπασχε από φυματίωση. Το 1826 δημοσιεύτηκε ανώνυμα το «An Essay on Mind and Other Poems» (James Duncan, Λονδίνο). Με την κατάργηση της δουλείας, την οποία υποστήριζε και η ίδια – όπως φαίνεται και από το έργο της «The Runaway Slave at Pilgrim's Point» (1849) – η οικογένειά της αντιμετώπισε οικονομικά προβλήματα. Ο πατέρας της πούλησε την φυτεία και μετακόμισαν αρχικά στο Sidmouth και μετά στο Λονδίνο. Ενώ βρισκόταν στο Sidmouth, η Ελίζαμπεθ έγραψε το ποίημα «Prometheus Bound» (1833)...

The Elizabeth Barrett Browning was one of the most important British women poets of the Victorian era. Born March 6, 1806 at Cohnadatia Hall, near Durham. She was the daughter of Edward Barrett Moulton Barrett, plantation owner in Jamaica, and Mary Graham-Clarke, who comes from a wealthy family of Newcastle and was the largest of the twelve children. Her father chose to raise children in England and not in Jamaica, where he had financial interests. The biographer Julia Markus says Elizabeth Barrett Browning believed she had African roots and her grandfather Charles Moulton. He began with poetry while he was still a child. Her father even saw, in 1820, to be issued in fifty copies an epic poem about the Battle of Marathon. For girls of that time were very educated and trained at home. He had very good knowledge of the Greek language. In her teenage years, faced health problems and probably suffered from tuberculosis. In 1826 published anonymously in «An Essay on Mind and Other Poems» (James Duncan, London). With the abolition of slavery, which supported itself - as shown by the work of «The Runaway Slave at Pilgrim's Point» (1849) - her family faced financial problems. Her father sold his plantation and moved first to Sidmouth and afterwards in London. While in Sidmouth, Elizabeth wrote the poem «Prometheus Bound» (1833) ...
