Ο Ανδρέας Κάλβος (1792-1869) -του οποίου παραδόξως δεν υπάρχει γνωστό σωζόμενο πορτραίτο- αποτελεί έναν από τους σπουδαιότερους Έλληνες ποιητές. Η νεοκλασικιστική του παιδεία και η ρομαντική του ψυχοσύνθεση συμπλέκουν στην ποίηση του το δραματικό με το ειδυλλιακό, το παγανιστικό με το χριστιανικό, τα αρχαιοελληνικά πρότυπα με την σύγχρονη επαναστατική επικαιρότητα, τον πουριτανισμό με τον λανθάνοντα ερωτισμό, την αυστηρότητα, τη μελαγχολία, την κλασικιστική φόρμα με το ρομαντικό περιεχόμενο, σύζευξη που είναι ορατή ακόμη και στη γλώσσα (αρχαΐζουσα με βάση δημοτική) και στη μετρική (αρχαϊκή στροφή και μέτρο που συχνά δημιουργεί, σε δεύτερο επίπεδο, δεκαπεντασύλλαβους)....

Andreas Kalvos (1792-1869) -of which oddly is not known surviving portraito- is one of the greatest Greek poets. The education of neoclassical and romantic temperament of the interconnect in the dramatic poetry of the idyllic, the pagan and the Christian, the ancient patterns with modern revolutionary news, the puritanism with latent eroticism, the severity, the melancholy, the classicist form with romantic content, coupling is visible even in language (archaic by city) and metric (archaic turn and measure often creates a second level of fifteen) ....
