OzHarvest is a for-impact organisation with a driving purpose to Nourish Our Country. It began with a simple concept to rescue excess food from restaurants, hotels, retailers, food outlets, supermarkets and corporate kitchens and deliver it to charities that feed the disadvantaged, homeless, youth, people-in-crisis and vulnerable Australians.
OzHarvest is a simple, effective service and is provided free to both food donor and recipient. The food is picked up and delivered the same day using refrigerated vans with a changing daily schedule.
Established in November 2004, our first van delivered 4,000 meals in the first month of operation. Now operating a fleet of 38 vans across the country including Sydney, Newcastle, Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Perth. OzHarvest has delivered millions of meals to people in need and saved thousands of tonnes of good food from landfill.
Each week OzHarvest collects over 87 tonnes of quality surplus food from more than 2,000 food donors and delivers it directly to more than 900 charities that feed people in need.
OzHarvest has expanded into community education and awareness through programs such as Cooking for a Cause, which connects and engages the corporate community through team building with soul and purpose. Our NEST program (Nutrition Education Sustenance Training) educates disadvantaged communities about nutrition and healthy eating, providing valuable life skills. Nourish is a hospitality training program for disadvantaged youth to provide them with a pathway to employment.
Because of OzHarvest and the agencies we support, many men, women and children now have access to a regular supply and wide variety of fresh and cooked food, fruit and vegetables and breakfast items.
Every $1 donated allows OzHarvest to deliver two meals to people in need.
