About Kanji Tree

KanjiTree teaches you to read and write both kanji and words.

See the full manual here: http://hextrex.blogspot.jp/p/kanji-tree-manual.html

Features:

• Kanji Recognition Game.
Step one to learning kanji is simply getting them into your head. Play this multiple choice game and learn to recognise the symbols.

Just like English words, many kanji have several different meanings so this game shows three at random, although one will always be the most common meaning. If you take too long to answer, the game will show helpful hints about the component parts. You can also choose to play this game using the readings instead.

Master each of the Jōyō grades (1-6) and JLPT levels (1-5).

• Word Reading Game.
Step two to learning kanji is reading actual Japanese words. Play this reading game to see if you can remember the meaning and/or pronunciation of words with kanji in them.

Almost all kanji can be pronounced in several different ways, depending on the word they're found in. Sometimes kanji can form a word on their own, and sometimes they're used in combination with other kanji/kana. You can choose the complexity of words to learn.

Contains vocabulary list for JLPT levels (1-5), and also the 8000 most frequently used words.

• Word Writing Game.
Step three to leaning kanji is being able to write them. This is the best way to cement the kanji into your memory, and is very useful because they are easy to forget unless you use them every day.

If you don't know how to write the kanji then you can press "Show Me" and the game will teach you, but you won't get a score. If you try to remember but make a mistake then the game will give you hints, such as where the next stroke starts. Score full points by writing the kanji without mistakes.

You can choose to include single kanji, simple words, or words with more than one kanji in the game's word list.

• Dictionary Search.
Search a database of 6,356 kanji and 170,000 words, for meanings, readings, etc.
Can search by romaji or hiragana, pronunciation or meaning.
Zoom in on any component radical or kanji.
Show words containing kanji with a specific reading.
Includes stroke order animations.

At any time during the games or dictionary, you can tap any kanji button to zoom in to see detailed information about it. When you're looking at a kanji, you can also tap on any of its radicals to zoom in further.

I'm just a single programmer writing this in my spare time, so if you like this app then please take a moment to rate it. You can also get in touch with comments or suggestions via the feedback button on the Options Screen.

Roadmap:

• Verb conjugation tutorial / tool.
• Search by drawing.

Best kanji learning and writing system I've used. Really good idea. The problem is it's clearly not created by a native. My Japanese friends had a good laugh at most of the readings which were either weird, minor or unused. Needs a Japanese review/edit and a lot of minor or unused readings cleared up to make it practical for these grades.

Awesome app. It has almost everything I need to learn kanji. Stroke orders, radicals, readings and vocabs. It even has a dictionary, and it has even categorized the kanjis. Amazing!

Yo nice I the fact that they took there time making this app very nice so many words you can learn amazing

Amazing app one of the best I've ever seen , the problem is that it's not well designed like most of the other apps , but still an amazing app

Best kanji app out there. You can learn new kanji, practice them, read them, anything. It's a 100 times better than any other kanji app out there, even the paid ones, and trust me, I've tried them all. The creator is also very responsive to any problems or bugs you might have, and still working hard to improve what is already this awesome. Love it, never gonna use anything else, and recommended to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Edit. Changed to 5/5 after recent update. Addressed my concerns and added even more. Perfect. Some incorrect readings, more of a flashcard game. Something that would drastically improve it is if you could see or check readings after getting an answer correct

Best app without any doubt in learning kanji, but there should be an option to remove the meaning of the words in the writting section, please!

Very good app for learning kanji. Not my first or only app i'm using to learn japanese but if you struggle with kanji this should help, especially with writing. With the ways you are tested it is quite easy to get into. Could use a help section for advice or details on what to do (even though it is easy to use) but even without that its still very useful.

Downloaded yesterday and I'm already in love with this app! Graphics not the best, but really great in functionality. It's certainly going to stay on my phone for a long time. Thanks a lot!

R70%
by R####:

Very good app. Only thing is that I cannot understand how the lists overview in writing works... Can you explain that a bit please? Another thing is that the errors when writing are too sensitive, sometimes just laying my finger once triggers 2 errors. Good work!!

It was recommended by a friend, up till now it works good. Thought, you do need some previous knowledge of kanji to know if you are holding chopsticks (HAshi) or a bridge (haSHI)... otherwise you may lose your bright future as a cardstacker... a shame truly.

This is exactly what I'm looking for. The Kanji writing game is fantastic. Some things that keep it from getting that 5th star 1) Help page would help a LOT. For example, it's not clear what the Kanji Order radio buttons in the Reading and Writing games mean in the context of that game. It's only after snooping around this app page that I can deduce what they do, and even then, it's not confirmed anywhere 2) An undo button might be nice. The stroke recognition tends to read a lot of strokes incorrectly 3) Words with no Kanji in the writing game essentially take the kanji you had to answer previously. This is not immediately apparent.

Usually crashes when switching between apps. One-time undo button would be nice due to accidental clicks.

Is this really for free? This is an excellent app... I'm still looking for the catch... absolutely recommended for kanji study and practice

R70%
by R####:

Quite a good app. Very useful for practice . only thing stopping this from being perfect is a lack of audio for the most common reading and some finicky UI controls.

Not the prettiest, but I love how the radicals pop out from the kanji. It's very easy to use. ♥

S70%

I love it, but for a beginner like myself, I would prefer if it had pronunciations for kanji, if not in the exercise then in a dictionary so I could check to see if I am reading it correctly.

One of my two favorites, tried a lot of similar, but this one got stuck.

I really love it! Very great and usefull. I would give all the five stars but a bug (?) in the recognition of kanji (after 15 or 20 kanji all the buttons to give the answer became not responsive and I need to restart the session) doesn't allow to keep practice. It's really frustrating. Waiting for the next version with the hope the problem will be fixed.
