واللعبة تُلعبُ على لوحةٍ مربعةِ الشكل، تُقَسَّمُ تلك اللوحة إلى أربعةِ وستين مربعاً، بحيث تُلونُ المربعات بلونين مختلفين، فكلُّ مربعٍ أبيض مثلاً يليه مربع أسود ويليه أبيض وهكذا، وهي من أشهرِ الألعاب الذهنية في العالم، يلعبُها اثنين، بحيث يمتلك كل لاعب جيشاً مكوناً من ستةُ عشرَ قطعة

تحتوي اللعبة على اثنين وثلاثين قطعة، كلّ لاعب له ست عشرة قطعة، حيث يكون مع كلّ لاعب ملك أو شاه، ملكة أو وزير، فيل، حصان، قلعة أو رخ، وثمانية جنود أو بيادق.
