جمع أبو داود في كتابه هذا جملة من الأحاديث، وقد بلغت أحاديثه 5274 حديثـًا، وكتابه السنن صنفه وانتقاه من خمسمائة ألف حديث.

اسمه : سليمان بن الأشعث السجستاني، وهو من سجستان وهي مدينة تقع في أرض البلوش الازديين والتي تقع في إيران، وله مؤلفات منها : مسائل الإمام أحمد، المراسيل، وأشهرها : سنن أبي داود، ويعتبر أبو داود من أبرز علماء الحديث ، وهو أحد أصحاب الكتب الستة، ولد سنة 202 هـ وتوفي سنة 275 هـ.

وقد وجه أبو داوود همه في هذا الكتاب إلى جمع الأحاديث التي استدل بها الفقهاء، ودارت بينهم، وبنى عليها الأحكام علماء الأمصار، وتسمى هذه الأحاديث (أحاديث الأحكام) وقد قال المؤلف في رسالته لأهل مكة: (فهذه الأحاديث أحاديث السنن كلها في الأحكام، فأما أحاديث كثيرة في الزهد والفضائل، وغيرها من غير هذا فلم أخرجها).

Name: Sulaiman bin Shaggy Sijistani, a Sajistan a town in the land of the Baloch Yazidis which are located in Iran, and his books, including: Imam Ahmad matters, messengers, most notably: Sunan Abi Dawood, and is considered by Abu Dawood of the most prominent modern scholars, one of the owners of the books six, was born in 202 AH and died in 275 AH.

Abu Daoud was brought to his main concern in this book to collect conversations quoted by scholars, and took place between them, and built by the provisions of the regions scientists, and called this hadith (sayings of provisions) have been the author in his message to the people of Mecca said: (These conversations conversations are all Sunan in sentences, either many conversations in asceticism and virtues, and other non-directed this film).
