About Flora Explorer
Wondering what that plant is? Flora Explorer can help! Simply search on a map area or use one of the many descriptive categories to narrow your search for native plants in the region east of Melbourne.
With Flora Explorer you can search for a plant based on descriptive characteristics or to generate a list of native plants specific to a property. Then, use the range of filters to identify plants that are habitat for native animals, important in waterways or commercially available to help your landscape planning. In addition to the 968 native plants in the app, you also get identification information and recommended treatments for 69 common environmental weeds.
This app is suitable for beginners in plant identification through to professionals. Extensive information is provided on plant structure, leaves, flowering, growing conditions, garden use, conservation status and aboriginal use. Multiple search functions allow you to look for a specific plant based on geographic location, a specific address, common name, scientific names, flower colour, general plant groups, waterway function or habitat role.
Still can’t figure out which plant it is? Submit a photo of the plant and your local council will assist with identification.
Found an interesting or rare plant? Help build your council’s botanical records by submitting a record of the plant through the app. Your sighting will be confirmed and may be added to the Victorian Biodiversity Atlas.
While this app may be useful in many areas of Victoria, it specifically covers the native plants within the local government areas of Yarra Ranges Council, Nillumbik Shire Council, Knox City Council and the City of Casey combined.
Support for this app has generously been provided by Melbourne Water, Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority, The Normal Wettenhall Foundation, Yarra Ranges Council, Knox City Council, Nillumbik Shire Council and the City of Casey.
