সুকুমার রায়ের জন্ম ১৮৮৭ সালের ৩০শে অক্টোবর, কলকাতার এক ব্রাহ্ম পরিবারে। সুকুমার ছিলেন বাংলা শিশুসাহিত্যের উজ্বল রত্ন উপেন্দ্রকিশোর রায় চৌধুরীর ছেলে। সুকুমারের মা বিধুমুখী দেবী ছিলেন ব্রাহ্মসমাজের দ্বারকানাথ গঙ্গোপাধ্যায়ের মেয়ে। ১৮৮৭ সালে সুকুমার রায়ের জন্ম। সুবিনয় রায় ও সুবিমল রায় তাঁর দুই ভাই। এ ছাড়াও তাঁর ছিল তিন বোন।

সুকুমার রায় জন্মেছিলেন বাঙালি নবজাগরণের স্বর্ণযুগে। তাঁর পারিবারিক পরিবেশ ছিল সাহিত্যনুরাগী, যা তাঁর মধ্যকার সাহিত্যিক প্রতিভা বিকাশে সহায়ক হয়। পিতা উপেন্দ্রকিশোর ছিলেন শিশুতোষ গল্প ও জনপ্রিয়-বিজ্ঞান লেখক, চিত্রশিল্পী, সুরকার ও শৌখিন জ্যোতির্বিদ। উপেন্দ্রকিশোরের ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধু ছিলেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর, যিনি সুকুমারকে সরাসরি প্রভাবিত করেছিলেন। এ ছাড়াও রায় পরিবারের সাথে জগদীশ চন্দ্র বসু, আচার্য প্রফুল্লচন্দ্র রায় প্রমুখের সম্পর্ক ছিল। উপেন্দ্রকিশোর ছাপার ব্লক তৈরির কৌশল নিয়ে গবেষণা করেন, এ নিয়ে পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা চালান এবং মানসম্পন্ন ব্লক তৈরির একটি ব্যবসায় প্রতিষ্ঠান গড়ে তোলেন। মেসার্স ইউ রয় অ্যান্ড সন্স নামে ঐ প্রতিষ্ঠানের সাথে সুকুমার যুক্ত ছিলেন।

কলকাতার প্রেসিডেন্সি কলেজ থেকে ১৯০৬ সালে রসায়ন ও পদার্থবিদ্যায় বি.এসসি.(অনার্স) করার পর সুকুমার মুদ্রণবিদ্যায় উচ্চতর শিক্ষার জন্য ১৯১১ সালে বিলেতে যান। সেখানে তিনি আলোকচিত্র ও মুদ্রণ প্রযুক্তির ওপর পড়াশোনা করেন এবং কালক্রমে তিনি ভারতের অগ্রগামী আলোকচিত্রী ও লিথোগ্রাফার হিসেবে আত্মপ্রকাশ করেন। ১৯১৩ সালে সুকুমার কলকাতাতে ফিরে আসেন। সুকুমার ইংল্যান্ডে পড়াকালীন, উপেন্দ্রকিশোর জমি ক্রয় করে, উন্নত-মানের রঙিন হাফটোন ব্লক তৈরি ও মুদ্রণক্ষম একটি ছাপাখানা স্থাপন করেছিলেন। তিনি ছোটদের একটি মাসিক পত্রিকা, 'সন্দেশ', এই সময় প্রকাশনা শুরু করেন। সুকুমারের বিলেত থেকে ফেরার অল্প কিছু দিনের মধ্যেই উপেন্দ্রকিশোরের মৃত্যু হয়। উপেন্দ্রকিশোর জীবিত থাকতে সুকুমার লেখার সংখ্যা কম থাকলেও উপেন্দ্রকিশোরের মৃত্যুর পর সন্দেশ পত্রিকা সম্পাদনার দায়িত্ব সুকুমার নিজের কাঁধে তুলে নেন। শুরু হয় বাংলা শিশুসাহিত্যের এক নতুন অধ্যায়। পিতার মৃত্যুর পর আট বছর ধরে তিনি সন্দেশ ও পারিবারিক ছাপাখানা পরিচালনার দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। তাঁর ছোটভাই এই কাজে তাঁর সহায়ক ছিলেন এবং পরিবারের অনেক সদস্য 'সন্দেশ'-এর জন্য নানাবিধ রচনা করে তাঁদের পাশে দাড়ান।

কর্ম জীবন

সুকুমার রায়ের স্বল্পস্থায়ী জীবনে তাঁর প্রতিভার শ্রেষ্ঠ বিকাশ লক্ষ করা যায়। সন্দেশের সম্পাদক থাকাকালীন সময়ে তাঁর লেখা ছড়া, গল্প ও প্রবন্ধ আজও বাংলা শিশুসাহিত্যে মাইলফলক হয়ে আছে। তাঁর বহুমুখী প্রতিভার অনন্য প্রকাশ তাঁর অসাধারণ ননসেন্স ছড়াগুলোতে। তাঁর প্রথম ও একমাত্র ননসেন্স ছড়ার বই আবোল তাবোল শুধু বাংলা সাহিত্যে নয়, বরং বিশ্বসাহিত্যের অঙ্গনে নিজস্ব জায়গার দাবিদার।

প্রেসিডেন্সি কলেজে পড়বার সময় তিনি ননসেন্স ক্লাব নামে একটি সংঘ গড়ে তুলেছিলেন। এর মুখপাত্র ছিল সাড়ে বত্রিশ ভাজা নামের একটি পত্রিকা। সেখানেই তাঁর আবোল তাবোল ছড়ার চর্চা শুরু। পরবর্তীতে ইংল্যান্ড থেকে ফেরার পর মন্ডা ক্লাব (ইংরেজি ভাষা) নামে একই ধরনের আরেকটি ক্লাব খুলেছিলেন তিনি। মন্ডা ক্লাবের সাপ্তাহিক সমাবেশে সদস্যরা 'জুতো সেলাই থেকে চণ্ডীপাঠ' পর্যন্ত সব বিষয়েই আলোচনা করতেন। সুকুমার রায় মজার ছড়ার আকারে এই সাপ্তাহিক সভার কয়েকটি আমন্ত্রণপত্র করেছিলেন সেগুলোর বিষয়বস্তু ছিল মুখ্যত উপস্থিতির অনুরোধ এবং বিশেষ সভার ঘোষণা ইত্যাদি।

ইংলান্ডে থাকাকালীন তিনি রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের গানের বিষয়ে কয়েকটি বক্তৃতাও দিয়েছিলেন, রবীন্দ্রনাথ তখনও নোবেল পুরস্কার পাননি। ইতিমধ্যে সুকুমার লেখচিত্রী/প্রচ্ছদশিল্পীরূপেও সুনাম অর্জন করেছিলেন। তাঁর প্রযুক্তিবিদের পরিচয় মেলে, নতুন পদ্ধতিতে হাফটোন ব্লক তৈরি আর ইংল্যান্ডের কয়েকটি পত্রিকায় প্রকাশিত তাঁর প্রযুক্তি বিষয়ক রচনাগুলো থেকে।

সুকুমার রায়ের সৃষ্টি আজও আমাদের আলোড়িত করে। সেই তালিকায় রয়েছে আবোল তাবোল, পাগলা দাশু, হ য ব র ল, চলচ্চিত্র চঞ্চরী সহ অসংখ্য মণি মানিক্য।

১৯২৩ খ্রিস্টাব্দে কালাজ্বরে (লেইশ্মানিয়াসিস) আক্রান্ত হয়ে মাত্র সাঁইত্রিশ বছর বয়সে সুকুমার রায় মৃত্যুবরণ করেন, সেই সময় এই রোগের কোনও চিকিৎসা ছিল না। তাঁর মৃত্যু হয় একমাত্র পুত্র সত্যজিৎ এবং স্ত্রীকে রেখে। সত্যজিৎ রায় পরবর্তী কালে ভারতের অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ চলচ্চিত্র পরিচালকরূপে খ্যাতি অর্জন করেন।
