Medical Jobs in Africa
Although the world’s second largest continent made up of more than 50 countries with varied natural resources, Africa remains the poorest continent. High poverty levels prevalent in most countries continue to present varied health challenges, which require more medical personnel to handle.
The situation is aggravated by the fact that very few health facilities are available particularly in rural areas.
The fact that African governments continue to depend heavily on foreign aid to undertake vital development activities including health care systems has meant that a big percentage of Africa’s population still does not have access to quality health care. The World Health Organization (WHO) has come in with various programs that have made it possible for local communities to have access to affordable health care.
The need for medical personnel in Africa has continued to grow especially in the last few decades. The increase has been necessitated by the fact that many people continue to acquire HIV/AIDS infections amongst other tropical diseases. Amongst Africa’s population, children under five years and women remain the most vulnerable. While many children under Five years still succumb to malaria and malnutrition, most women are still in dire need of health care during pregnancy and after.
Africa still requires medical personnel of different categories. Demand for doctors, nurses, pedetricians, nutritionists and specialists are still high. Those wishing to take up such opportunities can do so in several ways. African governments through relevant health ministries recruit foreign personnel not available locally. Non-governmental organizations providing health care services also employ foreign medical personnel. Apart from government health institutions, private health care providers including missionaries operating their own hospitals also have opportunities.
Foreign medical personnel wishing to work in Africa must however remain alive to the fact that official language in Africa differs from one region to another. There are English-speaking countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Nigeria and a few others. While countries in the northern parts of Africa mainly speak Arabic as the official language, most of those in the western part are Francophone countries. They also need to obtain work permits that allow them to work in Africa as foreigners.
The African continent is not only in need of medical personnel. Although many drug companies have made efforts to make drugs readily available to local communities, most health facilities still lack important medical equipments. Medical equipment manufacturers and distributors have the opportunity to supply both public and private health faculties with the necessary equipments.
