Els castells són les torres humanes que es construeixen des de fa més de dos-cents anys (se'n troben referències ja al segle XVIII) al Camp de Tarragona i al Penedès. A partir dels anys 80 del segle XX els castells es van anar estenent progressivament per tot Catalunya, Catalunya del Nord i les Illes Balears convertint-se en un símbol molt potent de la identitat catalana.

Les desenes de colles existents el 2015 estan formades per centenars de persones amb l'objectiu d'aixecar castells de diversa complexitat. Les construccions més habituals tenen les estructures bàsiques d'1 (pilar), dos (torre), tres, quatre i cinc, tot i que ja s'han fet construccions de fins a 10 castellers a la base. Pel que fa a l'alçada, un nombre molt petit de colles han arribat a fer castells de deu pisos (d'acord amb la manera de comptar els pisos provinent dels orígens - Ball dels Valencians - quan els dos membres que culminen el castell es posaven totalment drets ). La mítica "edat d'or" de finals del segle XIX ha estat pràcticament superada per les construccions actuals. A banda de la preparació física i tècnica o l'enorme suport social del fenomen casteller, l'element que es considera més determinant d'aquesta espectacular evolució ha estat la incorporació de les dones en una manifestació popular i festiva reservada, fins fa ben poc, exclusivament als homes. Des del 16 de novembre de 2010 els castells són Patrimoni Cultural Immaterial de la Humanitat per la UNESCO.

The castles are the human towers being built for over two hundred years (references are to be found in the eighteenth century) in Tarragona and Penedes. The mythical "golden age" in the late nineteenth century was almost overcome by the current buildings. In addition to the physical training and technical support, or the huge social phenomenon of Spanish, which is considered more crucial element of this dramatic development has been the inclusion of women in a popular and festive event reserved, until recently exclusively for men. Since 16 November 2010, the castles are the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
