About Talbot Hotel
Our hotel is situated in the central conservation area and adjacent Oundle Public School. Oundle is a beautiful stone built Georgian town located on a meander of the river Nene. The Hotel is one of the town’s principal buildings and one of the first buildings in England to be classified as a grade 1 heritage property.
The hotel’s origins date from the 7th Century AD although the oldest building is clearly medieval with a modified 16th c gallery with 16th c graffiti etched into its windows. The hotel is famous for its New Street and inner courtyard facades which were rebuilt with stone from Fotheringhay Castle in 1630. The stone mullion windows and timber staircase overlooking the inner courtyard are, reputedly, also from Fotheringhay Castle. The staircase is believed to have been used by Mary Queen of Scots when descending to her execution at the castle on 8 February 1587. Local history has it that an imprint on one of the staircase’s newel posts is that of the queen’s ring
The Talbot has recently re-opened following an extensive refurbishment and restoration programme agreed with English Heritage. Bedroom numbers have been reduced from 40 to 34 enabling a number of bedroom suites and a larger restaurant to be created. 21st c facilities now rub shoulders with history.
The Eatery at the Talbot Hotel is fast gaining a reputation for its cuisine and delightful surroundings. The Peterborough Telegraph’s Joni Ager recently reviewed the Eatery and rated the experience 9 out 10.
The new Coffee House with its patisserie offers a true high street coffee experience. The difference is the ambience and surroundings and we bake on the premises. Take a sofa in the glass house or a seat on one of our varied internal and external areas and our staff will come to you and take your order. Free WI Fi and newspapers in lounge areas.
