About Mark Schlereth

Three-time Super Bowl champion and former All-Pro offensive guard Mark Schlereth joined ESPN in 2001 as an NFL analyst. He can be seen on NFL Live, First Take, SportsCenter and ESPNEWS, and he annually contributes to ESPN’s Super Bowl week and NFL Draft coverage. Schlereth also cohosts ESPN Radio’s Hill & Schlereth (7-10 p.m. ET M-F) which debuted January 10, 2012 featuring Schlereth and partner Mike Hill.

A two-time Pro Bowl selection and 1997 All-Pro, Schlereth played 12 NFL seasons after being drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 10th round in 1989 out of the University of Idaho. In all, Schlereth spent six seasons with the Redskins (1989-94) and six with the Denver Broncos (1995-2000), earning three Super Bowl rings (1992, 1998 and 1999).

Known for his hard-nosed competitiveness, Schlereth played 156 games during his NFL career before retiring in April 2001 after his 29th surgery (20 on his knees).

In addition to his NFL role, Schlereth’s work on other ESPN platforms includes a biweekly column for ESPN The Magazine titled “The Marksman.” He also contributed video blogs and a college baseball journal to ESPN.com in 2008 for “Meet the Schlereths,” a reality-based web series that profiled him and his family travelling the country to watch his son play college baseball for the University of Arizona.

Outside of ESPN, Schlereth joined KKFN 104.3 FM The Fan in Denver, Colorado in August 2010 with former Broncos teammate Alfred Williams and Darren McKee. In August 2010 Mark released his first book “Ready, Set, Play!”, a collection of stories by famous athletes, coaches and public personalities and the impact their parents had on them as children. He is also currently working on the remake of the 1984 war Film Red Dawn, set to release in 2011. A true entrepreneur, he also launched Mark Schlereth’s Stinking Good Green Chili in April 2008, which is served in the Denver area (where Schlereth lives) at Coors Field and is available in Colorado King Scoopers, Safeway, Whole Foods and the Pepsi Center. Schlereth’s previous work includes a weekly NFL column for the Washington Examiner, and co-host of a local Denver sports radio show (2001-04) with former Broncos lineman David Diaz-Infante. He also had a recurring role as Detective Roc Hoover on CBS’s long-running daytime soap opera Guiding Light from 2006-09.

Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Schlereth was the first Alaska native to play in the NFL. His nickname “Stink” originated his first season with the Broncos in 1995, from a story he told of his sister working in an Eskimo town in Alaska, where people cut the heads off of fish and considered it a delicacy; these heads are known as stinkheads. He currently resides in Denver, Colo. His son, Daniel, was selected in the first round of the 2008 MLB draft as a relief pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks (and currently plays for the Detroit Tigers), and his daughter, Alexandria, is an actress on the MyNetworkTV series Desire.
