The Alabama State Department of Education is a state agency of Alabama, formed by the Alabama legislature in 1854. The Alabama State Department of Education is governed by the Alabama State Board of Education and has oversite over all Kindergarten through 12th Grade public schools in the state. The Department’s overarching goal is to make sure every student graduates from high school on time and prepared for the workforce or for continued academic preparation at a college/university.
