Dewan Da’wah Islamiyah Indonesia (disingkat Dewan Da’wah) didirikan atas inisiatip alm Bpk DR Mohammad Natsir (terlahir 1908), Perdana Menteri NKRI pertama tahun 1950-51*) melalui mushawarah alim ulama dan tokoh-tokoh Nasional dari berbagai kalangan dan daerah tgl 26 Februari 1967. Musyawarah dihadiri oleh unsur unsur Muhammadiyah, Persatuan Ummat Islam (PUI) berbasis di Jawa Barat, Mathlaul Anwar (MA) berbasis di Banten, Persatuan Tarbiyah Islamiyah (Perti) berbasis di Aceh dan Sumatera Barat, Al Jamiatul Washliyah berbasis di Sumatera Utara, Persatuan Islam (PERSIS), Jam’iyah al Irsyad al Islamiyah, Al Syafi’iyah berbasis di Jakarta dan sekitarnya. Diantara tokoh-tokoh yang hadir pada musyawarah historis dan yang sejak awal mendukung Dewan Da’wah adalah Buya Sutan Mansyur, ex Ketua Umum PP Muhammadiyah , Syafruddin Prawiranegara, ex Ketua Pemerintahan Darurat RI di Bukittinggi dan Gubernur BI pertama, Burhanddin Harahap, mantan Perdana Menteri RI (1953-55), Prawoto Mangkusasmito, Kasman Singodimejo, mantan Jaksa Agung RI dan Ketua MPRS, Mr. Mohammad Roem, mantan Menlu RI, KH Faqih Usman, K.H. Taufiqurrahman, Ketua Ikatan Mesjid DKI, KH Hasan Basri, eks Ketua Umum MUI, Yunan Nasution mantan Sekjen Masyumi, Ketua Dewan Da’wah pertama, A.R Baswedan, Ketua Dewan Da’wah Yogja, A. Rahman Shihab, Ketua Dewan Da’wah Sulawesi Selatan, Bukhari Tamam, unsur GPII yang jadi Sekertaris Umum Dewan Da’wah dan lain lain.
Dewan Da’wah didirikan untuk membentengi dan membela aqidah dan meningkatkan kefahaman Ummat terhadap nilai-nilai Islam dalam segala aspek kehidupan : Aqidah, Ibadah, Akhlaq dan Muamalah termasuk politik, ekonomi, sosial, budaya, pertahanan dan keamanan sebagai sumbangan dan partisipasi mereka yang cerdas dalam membangun kehidupan beragama, berbangsa dan bernegara melanggengkan NKRI untuk Indonesia seutuhnya. Dewan Da’wah mendirikan lembaga pendidikan dari tingkat TK sampai Perguruan Tinggi, lebih dari 750 mesjid dan musalla termasuk mesjid kampus, Islamic Centre di daerah pedalaman dan terpencil dan menerima amanah waqaf dari masyarakat untuk membangun dan mengelola mesjid/musalla diperkotaan, pedesaan dan daerah terpencil.
Sejak awal para pendiri Dewan Da’wah mendirikan universitas untuk mengisi kemerdekaan, dengan memadukan pendidikan umum dan agama, al. Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) (Yogkja), Univ. Islam Sum. Utara (UISU), Univ. Islam Bandung (UNISBA), Univ. Muslimin Indonesia (UMI) di Makassar, Univ. Ibn Khaldun di Bogor, Univ. Islam Riau di Pekanbaru di Medan, Univ. Islam Sultan Agung di Semarang dan inisiatip ini menginspirasi berdirinya puluhan bahkan ratusan universitas Islam swasta yang lain oleh Muhammadiyah, N.U., dll dan oleh Pemerintah sendiri dengan mendirikan STAIN, IAIN dan Univ. Islam Negeri (UIN) sehingga pendidikan bernuansa Islami untuk segala bidang ilmu, termasuk Kedokteran, Teknik, Pertanian, Sains, Ekonomi, Sains Kemanusiaan dll menjadi kenyataan yang penting dalam system pendidikan Indonesia. Untuk mememenuhi keperluan da’i yang yang mumpuni, sejak sepuluh tahun terakhir Dewan Da’wah menekuni Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Da’wah Mohammad Natsir (STID) Mohammad Natsir, program S1 Komunikasi Dkwah, di kampus seluas lima hektar di Tambun, Bekasi, Jawa Barat. Sejalan dengan ini, ditingkat propinsi telah berdiri program D2 Akademi Da’wah Indonesia (ADI), di delapan daerah dan sedang dikembangkan keseluruh propinsi dan juga berfungsi sebagai feeder STID. Lulusan STID yang sebagian besar mendapat beasiswa menjalani masa bakti satu tahun penuh didaerah-daerah pedalaman sebelum menerima ijazahnya. Da’i Dewan Da’wah ditempatkan di daerah yang sangat memerlukan di perkotaan dan pedesaan termasuk di daerah perbatasan yang rawan dengan gangguan dan ancaman terhadap keutuhan NKRI. Da'wah Council was established to fortify and defend aqidah and improve kefahaman Ummat against Islamic values in all aspects of life: Aqeedah, worship, morality and Muamalah including political, economic, social, cultural, defense and security as a donation and their intelligent participation in building religious life and nation perpetuate the Homeland to Indonesia completely.
