About Anova Culinary

NOTE: Recent updates to the Google Android API (level 23) affecting Bluetooth LE technology requires location permissions to be granted in order to use the Anova Android application.

The Anova Culinary app is the companion app to the Anova Precision Cooker Bluetooth, and WI-FI models. The App makes it incredibly easy to cook anything you want with Anova. You simply find the food you’re cooking, adjust the settings you’d like, and hit start.

What is Precision Cooking?

Once limited to the world's best restaurants, precision cooking (commonly referred to as sous vide) is now the fastest growing kitchen appliance category. The Anova Precision Cooker product line represents the next evolution of precision cooking technology, making it easy and affordable for everyone to reap the benefits of this type of cooking. Precision cooking is extremely easy. It usually involves these three simple steps:

1. Attach the Anova Precision Cooker to a pot and set time and temp using the app or the device interface. Using the app, simply find what you're cooking and hit "start."
2. Put food in a ziplock bag and clip it to the side of the pot. The circulator moves water around the pot, ensuring a consistent temperature throughout.
3. Finish with a quick sear or broil, or even throw it on the grill for a nice, crispy finish.

Love the hardware. App is a bit rough. Specifically the notifications. There's one constant notification providing the status of the unit. That works fine. However, the 2nd notification, telling you food can be inserted, stays around even after starting the cook. I pressed the 2nd notification during a cook this evening and it started the cook over. Yikes! Please fix. The hardware is amazing. Don't tarnish the brand with a lackluster app experience. You guys are much better than that!

Then anova cooker is excellent! The app needs to be improved quite a bit. Only one phone can access the cooker via WiFi At a time which is a total shame. All phones associated with the same account should be able to access the cooker via WiFi. Many common cuts of meat are missing from the guide as well. Also the ability to control the device from a desktop computer would be even better than being restricted to connecting with my phone only

M70%
by M####:

Frustrating App made for an overcooked 1st experience. App constantly looses connection despite strong wifi signal. Display flashes between the current and set temperatures too fast to read. Timer does not count down after resetting it. The product needs to include a full manual rather than instructions to go download it. The manual also needs clear instructions on how to set the timer manually if not using the app.

N70%
by N####:

The app is very user friendly, everything is simple to read and understand. The downside is that some of the features don't work as expected. For example the recipes will set your temperature and timer, but I was having a lot of issues with it working without playing around with the anova itself. I honestly recommend taking the extra 5 seconds and do the settings yourself. One final thing to note, the Bluetooth range on this product is not all that great.. if you plan on walking around your house with your phone, get the WiFi anova (or manually input all the settings for the anova yourself)

M70%
by M####:

This is a good try but it has some basic flaws. The biggest is that during cooking, if I enter the app to check, half of the times the timer resets and starts all over again. Sometimes temperature resets to a previous setting too. Also another thing is that if I use one of the ready guide's settings, I can't edit temperature and timer. Also the interface could be a little more appealing to the eye, like Joule's app.

M70%
by M####:

Works well, no problems with functionality. Biggest issue is sometimes my phone doesn't reconnect when I've left Bluetooth range. But that's minor. It does take a while to get up to higher temps but I add a little boiling water to help speed it along.

M70%
by M####:

I love my Anova sous vide but the app could use work. It doesn't seem to communicate very well with the sous vide. When opening the app after starting a cook, it'll sometimes stop the sous vide. Also, notifications can't be swiped away. Even after I've lost connection (unplugging it) I get a notification that the water temp is ready but I can't swipe it away.

M70%
by M####:

Love the cooker. App is worthless. Unintuitive. Never clear whether timer is active or waiting. I can't just start timer when I want, have to wait for the temp to cue it to ask me. The app screws up my cook more often than it has ever helped. Also, can't operate from a remote location. Thought I was going to be able to start preheat as I'm leaving work. Nope. Only operates within my home's wifi. Terrible app. Better off not offering anything.

W70%
by W####:

Latest version is a step backwards in functionality. Difficult and non-intuitive interface. No longer has the ability to select cook factors (size of cut, desired level of doneness). Have to look up temps and time online and fight the interface until it let's me but it in manually. Also, poor form requiring a login for BT only units. Hardware is great though.

by M####:

A couple months after purchase, the app no longer connects, and the cooker does not work. The cooker itself is broken. The display is blank, though it beeps sometimes when I press the screen. I am an engineer - getting the cooker connected was easy - when it worked. The problem is the cooker, not the setup.

M70%
by M####:

When it works, its fine... Since the last update, the screen flickers between the actual and the goal temp very fast. Also kind of annoying how it will notify you several times that the connection was lost when the unit is turned off.

F70%
by F####:

The Wi-Fi setup is really bad. If the machine can only use 2.4Ghz, then it should not have the capability to choose 5Ghz. At the very least, let you choose a different network.

M70%
by M####:

If Bluetooth gets disconnected and reconnects it defaults back to 55deg instead of the previous set temp. This is no good for long 24+ hour cooks. Caused me to loose a 100$ piece of meat since it reconnected at night and I didn't notice until the next morning. When the water temp was very low. Terrible app design, not a huge fan of the cooker either. Save the money and by a cheaper unit without WiFi and Bluetooth since neither work anyway.

M70%
by M####:

The app drops frequently. Why I have to power on the Anova device just to seek recipes or check the guide? Also lost connection frequently. I think the problem is not the device, but the app, turning the experience of use really bad.

A70%
by A####:

Software just gets worse with every release. WiFi just doesn't work. It won't pair with a phone, but it will still send alerts to phones via WiFi. Can only use bluetooth. With the latest release the phone display rapidly flashes between set and current temp - so fast that neither is visible.

M70%
by M####:

Nice recipes. Connectivity to sous vide is completely broken. Repeatedly loses connection and needs repairing. Timer autostarts as soon as water reaches temp, giving you no time to get ready. I disabled the connectivity and just use the app for recipes.

Q70%
by Q####:

Revised review, Great Company. Great Chefs guiding you. Bluetooth is always finicky, but if possible, spring for wifi. But still can be used without app connectivity. My results have been amazing at the least. Thanks y'all

Y70%
by Y####:

The circulator itself works great, but the app is terrible. When the water is heated and I add the food, when the temperature drops bellow the set temp, the app resets the timer and goes back to preheating stage. It does this every time the temperature drops. So it has become so unreliable to set it through the app, that I just use the controls on the circulator. This needs to be fixed.

This thing is a dream! Prior to writing this, I realized dinner was not prepped for the fam. Went home for lunch, dropped a tenderloin in a bag, and just started cooking remotely. By the time the wife gets home, dinner will be ready.

M70%
by M####:

This app is useless due to the issues both within it and the design. First, the design issue - the app comes with great chef recipes, but there is no way to store your own. This makes using the app for your own creations completely worthless since it is quicker to just do it manually and there are problems noted in the next paragraph. Now the big issue: wherever the app disconnects and reconnects, it does not recover gracefully (and it disconnects all the time). I've had the cooker reset to a lower set temperature, the timer get completely wiped out, and other issues. Additionally the notification for it just doesn't go away. I've still got one despite my machine being off and I can't dismiss it.

O70%
by O####:

Requires location for some weird reasons. No way to operate unit without app. Like sous vide but buy a different brand.

M70%
by M####:

Decent sous vide. Wifi needs a special router to work however and most routers in my county will not work due to the way ANOVA set it up. Notifications can be annoying as when the temp reaches its proper setting it already starts counting down, but if you click the notification it resets the entire machine.

J70%
by J####:

The latest update causes the target temp and the current temp to rapidly flash back and forth on my phone. Tried to reinstall app and it still happens. I'm pissed about this.

M70%
by M####:

It was okay. What happened to the keep warm functionality? The notifications that won't go away are annoying. I just use the manual setting now. Defeats the purpose.

M70%
by M####:

The app is adequate, but fill of garbage ads you don't need for cooking, and never once has the app maintained its connection through an entire cooking session. Use it to keep an eye from afar, but don't bother using the timer or you will screw yourself.

K70%
by K####:

Difficult WiFi connection. Drops frequently. I've done everything they have suggested to make it work. Bought the Anova I did for the ability to connect to WiFi. Waste of the extra money. Love the Anova, hate the connection

N70%
by N####:

It's very handy having this to monitor the machine, but it resets the timer many times (I just have it for 2 weeks now), making me take notes of cooking start hours since I fear it resets the timer later on, which is a bit stupid and annoying.

F70%
by F####:

Really poor, can't keep timing, keeps disconnecting. Better off using manual temperature and time.

M70%
by M####:

Awful, awful connectivity. The cooker is practically unusable with the application (standalone is excellent). Beyond imagination how it possible in 2017 to have such lousy app (and device) design and execution of the connectivity technology.

X70%
by X####:

So, everything is super awesome and I love this thing! However, lately the timer has been reseting itself and I haven't been able to debug what is causing it. But, the fact that it's happening is annoying.

R70%
by R####:

App notification stays visible unless I restart the phone. Program crashes and screen turns white.

J70%
by J####:

I like the recipes feature. The application overall could be more intuitive though. It's not really a big deal once you get used to it.

O70%
by O####:

Brings my cooking skills to the next level. Just don't talk about your immersion circulator. No one cares. They just love the food that comes out of it.

M70%
by M####:

I'm in the same situation as most folks. The persistent notifications are very annoying, and you most go into the app to dismiss it. Also, when interacting with the temp or sometimes just checking the app, my timer resets, losing whatever time it has already counted.

M70%
by M####:

I have the 800 watt unit. I have the lack of controls on the unit. I had to make space on my phone for an app that can't connect to the unit so that is aggravating. Just bad designs all round.

M70%
by M####:

the cooker itself is really nice; but whenever i change the cooking time (eg from 5 hours to 4 hours), walk away, come back and open the app, it goes back to the original cooking time! anova, pls fix this issue ????

P70%
by P####:

The app connection to the machine is terrible. I keep losing connection and have to go back to my machine to reconnect. Defeating the purpose of having the app to ease things.

U70%
by U####:

Not the most user friendly app. Would like some more recipies for interesting cooking ideas (glazes, marinades, etc)

M70%
by M####:

A want to like this, but it's terrible at requiring the Anova and cooking temp and time left if I walk away and come back. I don't use it anymore and just sent the temp on the device.

M70%
by M####:

So simple, but powerful. Unfortunately it spams with alerts that often aren't that useful and can't be cleared without re-opening the app.
