Newer versions of Android now include this functionality. However as of 4.1.2 I still can't get it to work. I set up all my family and friends with different patterns and notification sounds, but I always get the default text sound no matter who texts, so I'm keeping this going until it works properly natively.

This program allows you to set a different notification sound for each contact in your phone, instead of a single sound for all incoming SMS messages.
The Android OS allows you to set a personalized ringtone for a contact, but unlike iPhone and Blackberry, you can not set individual notifications for SMS messages, all of them get the same sound. More and more we communicate by text rather than voice calls. I was unable to find an app to do this so I wrote one.
To use this app, install it, and run it. Set up sounds for each of your contacts and a default sound. Turn off the system notification sound (or you'll get the default and the custom sound played) but you can leave vibrate on if you want. When a text comes in, it will use the assigned notification sound instead of the system default. I think it fills a gap that annoyed many people switching to Android from other platforms.

If you had a problem with the numbers you setup not being recognized, delete them and re-add them to your list. This has been fixed in the latest version but the data on your phone may still be incorrect. If you are still having this problem with a contact after the update, delete the contact and set it up again.

Finally.........a app where I can set a specific tone for my text messages....now I can know if I really want to answer right away or not......just added today and is working great.....more people need to try....

Can't set hte "Default Notification" to a silent tone so you can still use your phones built-in notifications. I don't mind hearing double, as I only need this for 1 contact - my emergency management page out number, so I've got a long distinct ringtone telling me "I gotta go." On another note, you see an on screen notification popup that "You've not set a notification sound for XXX-XXX-XXXX" every time a message comes through, which gets really annoying. Also, this message doesn't play any done for group/MMS messages. Not worth $0.99 in my opinion. Needs a lot of work.

This was the one thing i was missing coming over from blackberry. Apparently there are SMS apps which allow you to set custom alerts, but I didnt want to replace the existing app or add yet ANOTHER network. This app does exactly what it says, no more no less. Well done.

I'm using an HTC One. App promised personalized notififations. Only changes the default. My phone does that native. Make it work as advertised and it's a 5* app. Description says contact you. How?
