Do you miss the feature from earlier java based phones, where you can mark an SMS you have received as 'unread'?
Well, with this small app you can enjoy that feature again.
Now, you can claim that you did receive the SMS, haven't yet read it. ;-)
A note about the permissions used by this app:
Read & write SMS: To mark them as read/unread.
Read contacts: To convert the sender numbers to names, in the way you have saved to your address book.
Notes for reviewers:
I have tested the app to be working on my phone.
1. However, there may be cases, when the app crashes on some other hardware.
In such a case, (before down-rating the app), please "report" the crash to google, so that I can try to rectify the issue.
2. This app, "SMS read/unread", uses the default android database used for storing the SMSes, to mark the SMS as read/unread. Some messaging apps (e.g. Google hangout) do NOT use this default database, but they use their own copy of that database to fetch these SMSes. They may have their own reasons for doing it. Hence, if your messaging app is one of such apps like hangout, then you will not see updated read/unread status in your app. However, the messaging apps, which are provided by the phone manufacturer, *usually* use the default android database.
I had experimented that the SMS read/unread status does show changed in my default messaging app. However it remains unchanged as seen in google hangout, whether I mark the message as read from this app, or from my phone's messaging app.
Unfortunately, there is nothing much I can do about this issue. Sorry about that.

Messenger on Android 7.1 was insisting I had an unread SMS. When I restored the database from a backup the unread count went to 2! I read the full description of this app and decided to try it. It told me, correctly, that I had zero unread. So I uninstalled all updates to Messenger. Still 2 unread. Then I updated Messenger. Zero unread. Thank you.

Works exactly as described however I found that you need to enable "write message" permission which can only be done if your rooted and requires another app such as "app ops" to enable the permission. Would rate 5 stars if you could also read/unread mms as well as sms

Works perfect! Thanks. Now if I read a message I know ill forget to reply to later I can just mark it as unread. Pops up in the notification bar and blue light flashes to remind me. Perfect!

Great idea, but as others have reported the app will change an SMS from 'read' to 'unread' but the messaging app doesn't show this. There is no way to close the messaging app, so I rebooted the phone, but no use. The message is still 'read'. Maybe it works on other phones?

Uninstalled. App says sms unread after using this app to change it, but my default sms client does not recognize it as unread. Just need an app to change read/unread, not a new sms app for sending and receiving.

What you get is a list of your individual SMS's, no group convos. To top it off, the context menu has no options-- only a Help (about). Doesn't function for my use.

Looking for an app that adds an unread function to the native messaging system. This is a bare bones messaging app that includes an unread function but is not compatible with the native message system.
