Menurut beberapa sejarahwan Islam, para pemuda tersebut bernama: Maxalmena, Martinus, Kastunus, Bairunus, Danimus, Yathbunus, dan Thamlika, serta seekor anjing bernama Kithmir. Banyak yang berpendapat sejarah ini terjadi di Suriah, tetapi ada beberapa ahli Al Qur'an dan Injil berpendapat mereka berasal dari Yordania.
