******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF URBAN CONTEMPORARY Contemporary MUSIC ********************
Urban Contemporary is a specific type of music radio format, with branches such as mainstream urban and rhythmic contemporary. The term was popularized by DJ Frankie Crocker during his time as a program director for New York’s WBLS radio station back in 1974. The term "Urban Contemporary" has a strong association with African-American music. For Latinos, Urban Contemporary for Latinos is more Latin urban, notably Reggaeton, bachata, or Latin hip hop.
Most radio stations that were into Urban Contemporary promoted a music playlist comprised of nothing but R&B, hip hop, R&B, electronic dance music such as drum and bass and dubstep, and Caribbean music particularly zouk, reggae, reggaeton, bouyon, and every now and then Soca (in London, Toronto, Miami, New York City, and Boston). Urban Contemporary was developed through the characteristics of genres such as R&B and soul. This type of music is popular among African-Americans, and virtually all radio stations with Urban Contemporary formats have branches in cities with considerable African-American populations, particularly Atlanta, New York City, Baltimore, Cleveland, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Detroit, New Orleans, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Memphis, Boston, Oklahoma City, Charlotte, and Philadelphia.
Some Urban Contemporary radio stations play classic 70s’ and 80s’ soul music, while others play gospel music. Today, urban contemporary music has evolved. Radio stations play Urban Contemporary music that is a crossover of contemporary R&B and rap, sometimes combined with dance beats.
