******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF Motown MUSIC ********************
Motown (from the words “motor” and “town”) music is a kind of soul music that was popularized by Berry Gordy Jr.’s American record company, Motown. The record company was key in developing the trademark "Motown Sound" or Motown music.
As a music genre, Motown music used tambourines (for accent/back beat), electric bass guitar (for melody), and it was sung with a call-and-response singing style borrowed from gospel music. Motown music are usually simple and melodic, steering clear of complex arrangements and vocal riffs.
Some of the key Motown artists and bands are Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Contours, The Miracles, The Marvelettes, The Jackson 5, The Four Tops, Shorty Long, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Martha and The Spinners, the Vandellas, The Velvelettes, The Monitors, Stevie Wonder, Chris Clark, Jr. Walker & the All Stars, Jimmy Ruffin, The Originals, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and later on (in the late 1990s) Erykah Badu, 702, and Brian McKnight.
The style developed by the Motown musicians became a huge influence on many non-Motown artists starting in the middle of the 1960s. In the United Kingdom, the Motown Sound influenced the northern soul movement.
