******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF TROPICALIA MUSIC ********************
Tropicalia, otherwise known as Tropicalismo, is a Brazilian artistic movement that emerged in the latter part of the 1960s. It encompassed artistic forms particularly poetry, theater, and music. The movement was characterized by a mixture of the avant-garde and popular, as well as a combination of traditional Brazilian culture and foreign influences.
At present, Tropicália is mainly attributed to the musical faction of the movement, which combined African and Brazilian rhythms with rock and roll. Musicians who joined the movement then include Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Tom Zé, Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso, and the lyricist and poet Torquato Neto. All of these artists participated in the 1968 album “Tropicália: ou Panis et Circencis”, which served as a musical proclamation.
A primary principle of Tropicália was antropofagia, a form of cultural cannibalism. The idea was conceived by poet Oswald de Andrade who, in 1928, published Manifesto Antropófago. Tropicalismo has been influential to rock musicians like Beck, David Byrne, The Bird and the Bee, Arto Lindsay, Of Montreal Acid Call, Nelly Furtado, El Guincho, and Devendra Banhart. In 1998, Beck released Mutations which was a tribute to Os Mutantes. Its hit single, "Tropicalia", hit the number 21 spot on the Billboard Modern Rock singles chart. Actress and singer Carmen Miranda is considered to be the pioneer of the Tropicalia movement in the 1960s.
