******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF TEJANO MUSIC ********************
Tejano music or Tex-Mex music (short for Texan-Mexican music) is the name attributed to numerous forms of popular and folk music which originated from the Mexican-American populations found within southern and central Texas.
Tejano music can be traced to its roots in the latter part of the 19th century, but it only turned into a music genre with a broader audience in the late 20th century because of artists like Selena (hailed as the "The Queen of Tejano").
Tejano music has several categories of bands and music, with three major categories that include conjunto, orchestra, and modern. A Conjunto band is comprised of instruments like accordion, bajo sexto, drum, and bass. An Orchestra is comprised of a drum, bass, synthesizer, electric guitar, and a brass section. Meanwhile, a Modern Tejano band consists of drums, synthesizers, electric guitar, bass and sometimes an accordion. What makes it modern is the heavy reliance on synthesizers.
Some of the influential Tejano artists and bands of recent decades include La Mafia, Bobby Pulido, Ruben Ramos, Shelly Lares, Selena, David Marez, Xelencia, La Fiebre, La Sombra, La Diferenzia, Pete Astudillo, Patsy Torres, Jennifer Peña, Duelo, Los Arcos, Michael Salgado, Rebecca Valadez, Intocable, Elsa Garcia, Gary Hobbs, Los Palominos, and Elida Reyna Y Avante. Meanwhile, the newer generation of Tejano musicians include Gabriel Zavala, Lucky Joe, Devin Banda, AJ Castillo, Angel Y Vimana, Crystal Torres, Braulio Y Fuzzion, Audi Y Zentimiento, Costumbre, Negami, Tejano Highway 281, and Zamorales.
