******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF MARIACHI MUSIC ********************
Mariachi music is a kind of folk music which originated from Mexico in the 18th century. Mariachi music started as “Son Jaliscience”, a regional folk music style originally performed with purely string instruments and artists dressed in white pants and shirts normally worn by peasant farmers. This was later re-labelled as the “Son style”, with “mariachi” as the alternative urban form. Influences from other music styles like waltzes and polkas as well as addition of instruments like trumpets helped shape Mariachi. The music achieved national fame during the first half of the 20th century.
Mariachi group sizes depend on the number of available musicians. Typically, current Mariachi groups are comprised of at least one guitar, two trumpets, and eight violins. Traditional Mariachi guitars include a guitarron (bass guitar) and vihuela (a high pitched round-backed guitar).
Notable Mariachi groups include Los Caballeros and Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, while popular artists include Antonio Aguilar, Luis Aguilar, Pepe Aguilar, Ana Bárbara, Rocío Dúrcal, Shaila Dúrcal, Ana Gabriel, Juan Gabriel, Tito Guízar, José Hernàndez, Pedro Infante, Alejandro Fernández, Jorge Negrete, Manuel López Ochoa, Jenni Rivera, Javier Solis, and Chayito Valdez.
