******************** THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF INDIE POP MUSIC ********************

Indie pop music is a classification of alternative rock forged in the United Kingdom during the post-punk era of the 1980s. This genre, defined by jangling guitars, affinity with 60’s pop, and more melodic tunes, took its roots from The Smiths (the prevailing top independent band in the UK during the mid-1980s), as well as record labels Postcard Records and Rough Trade Records.

Normally used to define independent label artists, the term “indie” was attached to the Indie pop genre because of NME’s release of the C86 tape in the mid-1980s. The C86 collection featured the Pastels, the Wedding Present, and Primal Scream, among several other artists.

Grouping of bands was quite prevalent but the Indie pop scene wasn’t really coherent back in the late-1980s. Nicky Wire, the bassist of Manic Street Preachers, attributed the scene’s eventual coherence to the independence of the bands involved: "People were doing everything themselves - making their own records, doing the artwork, gluing the sleeves together, releasing them and sending them out, writing fanzines because the music press lost interest really quickly."
