Arewa is a hausa language term for the north. In Nigeria and the Republic of Niger, Arewa is the name of very specific historical entities: in Niger and Nigeria a precolonial state, and in Nigeria a small region of local government.

The Hausa language (or jausa) is a member of Afro-Asian languages. It is spoken by about 24 million people - called hausas - as a native language and by another 15 million people or more as a second language.

Native speakers are found in Niger and northern Nigeria, but used as lingua franca in a larger area in West Africa, especially among Muslims.
