About New Phil AR Tour

Overview

The New Philadelphia AR (Augmented Reality) Tour is designed to be downloaded and used by visitors to the New Philadelphia National Historic Landmark in Pike County, Illinois. This App allows visitors to view virtually reconstructed portions of the historic town and learn about the town’s history while walking through the landmark. Creation of the App was made possible by support from the United States National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom and the Illinois Rural Electric Cooperative.

New Philadelphia is historically significant as the first town in the United States to be founded and platted by an African American. The founder, Free Frank McWorter, was a slave who purchased his own freedom through money he had earned while being leased as a laborer. Free Frank moved west from Kentucky into Illinois and purchased land which he then platted and sold as lots, in the process founding the town of New Philadelphia. Free Frank used the proceeds from those lots to successively purchase the freedom of first his wife and later his children and grandchildren, all of whom had remained enslaved in Kentucky. Over the course of the mid-19th century, New Philadelphia grew modestly in size as a multi-racial community of whites and blacks peaking around 1870, however, the town was eventually abandoned in the early 20th Century and reverted to farmland.

The New Philadelphia AR Tour uses Augmented Reality technology to reconstruct and tell the story of a lost historic community.

How To Use

The New Philadelphia AR Tour App is intended for use while visiting the New Philadelphia site in Pike County, Illinois. The App works by recognizing 1 of 5 Guidepost signs positioned along the visitor path at the New Philadelphia National Historic Landmark. When a Guidepost is viewed through a mobile device, visitors are able to view virtual reconstructions of the town in their approximate locations and access informational content.

App users, not visiting New Philadelphia, may still view augmented reality content by opening the App and viewing reproductions of the guidepost signs that are available at:

Not enough instructions. Cannot drag anything into box, if that's what you're supposed to do. Would like some help. Am using a Galaxy Tab Pro.

This app returns an empty field back into the vibrant community that was there in the 19th century. I especially love the details like the chickens and the clotheslines. It is a great way for visitors to New Philadelphia to be able to envision what the town was like.

My family really enjoyed using the App. It was our first time using Augmented Reality and it was really cool to see history in front of us.

Worked just like it was supposed to. It was amazing to see the town recreated.

This app brings AR technology to what can often be a stodgy experience at historical sites. Watching the various parts of this town come to life on your own device nearly two centuries later is something previously only experienced on TV. A must visit and must try. I particularly enjoy collecting the various artifacts, which makes you feel engaged - like a detective!
