تنقسم الافلام الوثائقية حسب احد مؤسسيها الاوسكتلاندي جون جريرسون إلى مستويين ، المستوى الأعلى والذي يكون فيه صانع الفيلم قادر على التحليل والخلق ويلتزم في فيلمه بكل قوائد اخراج الفيلم الوثائقي ووسائله المحددة وتشكل هده الفئة الافلام المرجعية في السينما الوثائقية ، فيما المستوى الأدني الذي تدخل فيه فيه التقارير والأفلام التعليمية والربورتاجات وفيها يتحرر المخرج من كثير من قوائد الفيلم الوثائقي مثل مدة الفيلم , اطار الفيلم, تقنيات الصوت والمونتاج, اللغة, العناصر الفعالة ....

تاريخ الفيلم الوثائقي
