About WindTunnel

Turn your device into a wind tunnel simulator !

Draw obstacles and watch the fluid flow around. Experiment with different sizes, shapes, aerodynamic profiles and see what happens !

Visualize airflow with smoke, particles, or observe pressure field, velocity or turbulences. The simulation engine also computes an approximation of lift and drag.

The Wind Tunnel app lets you create beautiful wind tunnel scenes, play with the fluid and understand physics effects.
Fluid motion is computed by solving Navier-Stokes equations, at high definition and in real-time thanks to optimized code taking the most out of CPU and GPU performance. You can for example observe the mechanism of lift/drag over an airfoil, and how it stalls when the angle of attack increases (use two-finger rotate gesture to rotate the scene).

Full feature list include :

• choose between 4 actions (lower right button): interact with the fluid, draw obstacles, use eraser tool, or add rotors.

• visualization modes : particles (streamlines, streak lines and random), colored smoke (predefined stripes, streamlines or streak lines), pressure field, speed norm visualization, curl (visualize turbulences), velocity field (visualize speed direction) combined with speed norm or curl.

• Save/load your own designed scenes.

• Rotate obstacles with two-finger rotate gesture.
• Change smoke color by tapping twice at the top of the wind tunnel (when smoke is on and in “interact” mode )

• Adjust physical parameters : fluid viscosity, obstacle friction, wind tunnel input speed.
• Switch between two simulation modes: wind tunnel or “free” mode where fluid wraps around screen.
• In “Params”, then “Perf.param”, adjust the grid size and smoke resolution (high-end devices are able to compute larger grid sizes, allowing you to draw thinner obstacles).

• Predefined scenes : airfoil, cars, rocks, Kármán vortex street…

Use the android “back” button to close any interface screen, or to undo the previous action (previous draw/erase).
Use the android “menu” button to hide/show the bottom button bar.

The simulation software will not run on some old devices (it requires NEON instructions), if in doubt, try first the free version, WindTunnel Free.

Love the app. Does seem to crash when the object is rotated more than a few degrees per second. The line for drawing is too thick in my opinion. Would be nice if it had options for smoothing the drawing and making curved lines easier. It could be a five star app. Just need some more choices. Like drawing something and then scaling it to see it better. Mostly though, just want to be able to draw more detailed and smooth lines. And to be able to bend the lines to adjust something to perfection.

I would like it a lot more if I could zoom in and only study force on specific objects. So if looking at a car, study affect of changes to the environment on the wing. Zoom would help with drawing objects.

This is a nearly great app, fun to play with and great for developing intuition. However, it has a big problem with mass conservation which makes it, in some instances, less than ideal.

N70%

Great app, but I just wish there was a line tool in addition to free draw.

Great visualization tool and a load of fun to play around with.

Must have app!

I love the game that is super fun to experiment around but it in the free mode ( the mode where you can miss run with particles without wind) it always likes to make certain particles just disappear if that wasn't the case and it was where it couldn't just disappear then it would be much better it for many different experiments but when to line up perfectly it just disappears

This is a great app for playing around and experimenting with. Definitely worth it

Lots of fun to experiment with. Worth every cent

Nice app, usefull to all engineers who want have a quick preview of their designs. By the way more interaction tools are needed; as other users have said, a tool which allows you to create perfect figures (lines, circles and boxes) would be very usefull. I also have to report multiple crashes on my Samsung Tab S... So many... Anyway I'll put 5 stars as soon as these problems will be solved.

Excited to use these to explain aerofoils in my flight instructor briefings

This would be awesome if it could do 3d

Amazing!

Not clear how to load my own shape. Or indeed any NACA airfoil other than the one provided. Needs to be more clearly useful, not just pretty, to be a paid app.

J70%
by J####:

Excellent app. Only achieves half its potential without dxf import and drawing tools though.

Y70%
by Y####:

Great way to learn about fluid dynamics. Does this take into account compressible vs incompressible flow? I WISH you could select or toggle that on or off. Wonderful app.

Now I can play with wind, very cool

K70%

Fantastic app to illustrate fluid mechanics concepts in the classroom. Highly recommended!

C70%

A very good app. Would love some drawing tools though (paint style) Drawing perfect shapes by hand is near impossible.

C70%

Can't believe my eyes, an app of less than an MB size can do these many wonders. So realistic and fantastic simulations. I can spend hours on this app. Great work dev. One of the best purchase ever.

C70%

Excellent app. I was planning to build a small wind tunnel to help my students understand the principles of lift and fluid dynamics. This app has saved me a lot of effort! I would like the ability to have a library of different airfoil shapes but otherwise it suits my purpose very well.

T70%
by T####:

Could do with set of basic preset shapes, fluid presets, fit to grid when drawing and erosion simulation.

C70%
by C####:

Could do with some airfoil libraries and it would be great if it didn't erase everything when the screen times out

C70%
by C####:

It would be awsome if you could import shapes via DXF or some other format to be able to look at variations more precisely. Otherwise a really cool app.

Now you know what to do with all those extra flops on your phone. Please add CM?

I need more airfoil functions with alpha changes and standard airfoil libraries. It will come someday, I can't wait :)

I work as an engineer in a physical wind tunnel and love to play around in this simple app! The solver however does not conserve mass, so for certain cases the flow magically disappears...

Really good app. Very flexible and fun to use. I'd love to know more about the solver, turbulence model, etc.

Had it on iOS for months waiting for an Android version. Great app!

As a CFI I see a lot of potential for this app but I wish there was more airfoils to choose from since its not easy to draw a nice airfoil the first time. Being able to modify the airfoil's characteristics might be a good idea too. Thank you and keep the good work.

I have been waiting for this app on android for several years since I came across it on apple. Well worth the wait. Working as a sailing coach it is a great tool to explain what makes the boat go and get people to experiment. A drawing tool to get better shapes is the only way I can see to improve it. Possibly being able to import shapes from other programmes? However still a clear 5 stars
