About Jainism Encyclopedia
Jainism is one of the oldest Indian religions that emphasize complete non-violence and asceticism. Followers of Jainism are called Jain. Beginning in the 7th-5th century (BCE) Jainism teaches a path to spiritual purity and enlightenment.
In Jainism there are 24 spiritual leaders who have achieved liberation and perfection. They are called “Ford-leaders” or “Tirthankaras”. Mahavira (599-527 BCE) is regarded as the last of the great Tirthankaras of this era. He was a contemporary of the Buddha, who is generally considered the founder of Jainism. Jain rituals centre around sacred images and mantras. Jinas are believed to reside in top level of heaven, above the realm of the Gods.
