About ICE Standard

ICE Standard, the Emergency Standard Card App for Android, can help save your life.

Ambulances take patients to the ER over 16 million times each year in the US. ICE Standard helps first time responders and emergency room personnel locate a person’s updated medical information, emergency / medical contacts, medical insurance information, blood type, name, address and a photo verification of the individual. This application has been developed by the About the Kids foundation, a nonprofit organization, with input from EMTs, police officers, firefighters and emergency room personnel.

In order to make first responders are aware of the app, it is best to provide a shortcut on the lock screen. Some Android phones have this capability built in, while others will need to install third party lock screen apps to enable this.

One of the unique features of ICE Standard and the Emergency Standard Card is color coding that reflects your medical information. This helps first responders quickly determine the severity of potential issues with the patient, based on their medical history. Red indicates the individual has severe allergies, medical devices, health conditions, or is on medications. Yellow indicates the individual is taking medications. Green indicates the user is 'good to go', with no health complications.

The phone is regarded as a backup location for your emergency medical information, as in an accident your phone may be damaged, overlooked or out of power. A physical emergency card is the best way to provide health information for emergency personnel. The six standard places for emergency personnel to look are:

1 - Automobile – Glove Compartment
2 - Pedestrians – Wallet or Purse
3 - Bicyclists / Motorcycles – Under the Seat
4 - Home – Refrigerator Dairy or Butter Dish
5 - Sports Athletes – Coach’s Possession
6 - Work Place – Emergency Response Team Member.

Official Emergency Standard Cards can be ordered from EmergencyStandard.org.

Super easy to use and install. Just be careful to not put "none or n/a" in the fields that does not apply or else it will prompt a "high risk" code. It's easy to fix but just be aware. I really like this app because being an outdoors enthusiast, I almost never carry my wallet. But being a typical girl, I always have my phone on me to take pictures. Thanks JS for recommending this app :)

I recently switched my phone from an iPhone to a Samsung Galaxy s6. The app works perfectly on my IPhone. On the galaxy it's like the app freezes and does not give you the option to add to the lock screen. I am able to take a screenshot and add to lock screen that way, but it fills the whole background and not easy to read the info. The save and edit buttons are visible on the screenshot too. For someone with a life-threatening medical condition, I need this info visible on my lock screen. Please fix!

The implementation is simple yet elegant. Does exactly what it is supposed to do with a clean user interface. It'd be great to see an update to this app that brings its features closer towards an iPhone version which has a Smart911 integration. Nevertheless, a must have if running/skiing/traveling solo.

I have a Samsung S4 and this app works perfectly. I ride my bike a lot and this app give me peace of mind knowing that I will be taken care of in the event that I need help. I am going to have the rest of my family download and use it for sure. Thanks Joey!

This app is very well made. It is a simple way to be extra safe. In an emergency this app could save you time. Time that you dont have in an emergency. It is easy to use and the benefits are many. I recommend all people, young or old download this and be safe.

First I don't like that the picture can only come from the camera instead of existing photos. Then I have way too much medical history and too many medications to put on 1 line without information. If you put extra data in then it just looks messy. This would be fine for someone that's healthy but not anyone with serious or complex medical histories.

Being prior military we have a way of identifying allergies by our allergy tag on our id tags, if something were to happen. I am glad someone thought of a way identify personal emergency information on an item a majority of people carry around daily. It has all the vital information required in case something were to happen.

I have emergency info tattooed on my wrist, but this is even better. It shows, in red, I'm high risk, and that's really important because I have anaphylactic reactions to some mediations, and those are usually the ones they give you first! I just don't like that I need to take a photo, I should be able to choose from the gallery on my phone.

I like the idea. It would be nice if there was a pull down for common allergies, conditions & medications- it would make data entry easier and reading by medical personnel quicker because of standardization. Also, I'm not sure how responders will see info - on my phone (galaxy nexus pics 4.04) with phone screen locked the info is not seen.

Great information for your safety in case the SHTF. Since I have my phone unlocked when it's on or nearby not sweating the lack of having the lock screen option, but that would be a great addition developers... Looking good neverless, thank you

I installed this on the understanding that this would make my emergency contact information available for the relevant emergency teams to contact my next of kin. The app description states it makes it available on the lock screen but it doesn't on my Motorola Moto G phone. Immediately uninstalled.

Spent a long time entering info, saved, hit back button to go back to main screen, it did not. Ended up erasing most of what I entered. Also cannot figure out a way to make it easily found, galaxy 5 Verizon apparently won't allow it on lock screen.

The information content is good. I cannot save it to the lockscreen on my phone because there is no option to do so, so it is completely useless. Uninstalling it after this review.

Very easy to use. Always nice to have an extra way to help out our first responders! The only improvement is that it may be nice if you could have multiple users? Such as children on the same page?

Great app. It will really save my life if it's needed. Just one small problem and that is that you are unable to get to it if your phone has a password on. Are u not able to make it accessible without anyone having to unlock your phone ?

R70%
by R####:

The app and data could be accessible from the screen lock. My phone requires a passcode to acess everything on the phone. So unless the EMT is clairvoyant and know my passcode they will never be able to view the information in this app. So, the app is worthless to me. Disappointed because this was a great idea in theory.

I like the concept of this App. I put its icon on my Start screen. I'm just hoping that with wide spread usage, this app would be used as S.O.P. by first responders. This all wait and see.

Good app and thanks for making it free but if no dob is entered it defaults to current date. Should be blank. also date format is mm.dd.yyyy and there is no way to change this. Dangerous where the standard is dd.mm.yyyy so uninstalled. Jessica- how would this app have saved that guys life?

This app is probably MORE valuable than most apps. This app can actually aide in saving someone's life! I highly recommend this app to everyone, with or without any health conditions.

Great free app that can really help you in case of an emergency. Neat layout that gives a summary of all relevant information. Big thanks JS for introducing me to this app!

Greetings! I downloaded your emergency information application to my android, Samsung galaxy s5.  I believe this will be very helpful to me, except for one thing.  I keep my phone locked. Therefore, no emt, cop, firefighter, doctor, etc. will be able to access the information.  Would you please update the software, with an icon for the lock screen that someone can push, which will open the application and display the information?  Thanks for your time.

ICE information on a phone? Excellent idea!!! This app has all important information on one screen making it ready for an emergency responder to know what to look out for when stabilizing you.

I can't find any way of getting this to appear on my lock screen. I can only add one emergency contact. Not much good if we're in an accident together. Info content is OK but these glitches desperately need sorting out. Samsung Galaxy S6.

Tried this out on the recommendation of Eaden Saw. This app is easy to use and doesn't take up much space at all. The only problem I can see with this app is that it wouldn't be very efficient if your phone is locked or hard to get into.

What can I say.... This Application is absolutely amazing. I wish I had this App on my phone back in 2000 when I got into my Major Auto Accident. I'm sure it would have made a world of difference for the EMT onsite that day. Thanks for all the support and motivation. Yourself and the non-profit About the Kids is truly priceless. Don't know what I'd have done without you guys. The App looks great and I look forward to utilizing it and keeping it updated with my future medical information. Thanks again Joey!

Doesn't display on lock screen (Samsung S4 - Android Lollipop ) so practically useless in the context it would be needed. Will watch for updates, as had potential if this feature is addressed

I keep my phone locked so this app does not do what I need it to do and is useless because of that. I am using a BLU Life 8 XL running Android KitKat 4.4.2

App includes space for rxes, medical conditions, allergies, name/policy # of insurance company, and other info. It has two lines for emergency contact. The "other info" area can be used for just about anything from more emergency contacts to supplemental insurance. This app is simple, and it works well. It's not fancy, but it has the American order of the birth date, m/d/yr. It doesn't include height or weight. If that's important for you, put it in other info. I'm done looking for the perfect app.

App works great, was able to add all emergency contacts now. I'm in the medical field and app will be a big help in emergency especially if unresponsive patient.

Got this b/c it claims it shows on lockscreen for emergency services, however this is not the case. So, not useful, because no one who might need this will ever see it. :(

Could use a password to keep the edit button being used by someone else.. or move the edit button to a setting only accessible directly in main app launcher not shortcut. Otherwise great job !!

On a Galaxy Note 4, does not display on the lock screen (thus app is useless). Email address for developer listed in the Store was returned undeliverable. Uninstalling.

In an emergency situation, would a paramedic spend time to look for this app or be educated to know what it is if they even saw it on my phone? Also, my phone is always locked so its impossible for anyone to get into it to find this information anyway. If I left my phone unlocked, now my address is visible to anyone who may pick it up. Just concerns, otherwise great idea for an app! Runs well.

My Top Pick! Could use med dosage & med usage (times) selections (Usage may be text box). Would prefer med list be 1 item per line but that would cause more scrolling. Biggest annoyance is phone's back button literally backs you up through each thing you've edited like a Web browser. REQUEST: Remove edit button and have setup/edit option via phone's alt-menu button. Also req possibility to select emergency contact through phone contact list. Like current ability of free-form contact also. Dials out well.

A70%
by A####:

It would work better if the contact info. could span two lines when needed so I can put both their name and relation to me without it overlapping the phone number, making neither readable. Also, the conditions and devices should be in a bulleted list instead of separated only by commas, plus conditions and devices should be two separate lists. There should also be a designated area for hospital name and patient ID number (like the area for insurance) so they know which hospital to bring you to.

An app that can be used to to aide in an emergency situation? Count me in. Seems like a practical no-brainer to have this installed on your smart phone. Happy to have found it.

Great Idea... would be good if it was visible on lock screen, DOB presented in a format suitable for UK users, list medications in a list view rather than string. It would also be good if you could call from the emergency contacts and have relationship to the person.
