If you have a rectangular coffee table, simply have a runner running along the length of the table at the center. For character, choose a runner with a beautiful print based on your choice. Apart from looking beautiful on its own, a runner adds a lot of character to the room and some much-needed color too.
At the center of the table place some gorgeous tea-light holders and light them up with candles every evening. This is particularly great if you have a glass coffee table so that the light reflects on it and makes the table look absolutely perfect.
People love potpourri and the enticing fragrances it is available in. Simply put it in a nice crystal bowl and allow your living space to give out a mesmerizing scent. In another idea, put the potpourri in a small fish bowl, toss in colored pebbles (in accordance with the color of the potpourri) for a dash of color, seashells, or make layers of sand and potpourri to make a great centerpiece. Surround the bowl with tea-lights whenever you feel like just for some extra jazz.
Place a tray on the table with a small flower vase and replace the flowers regularly. This table decoration always works without fail. Alternately, place shells, pine cones, or miniatures of your favorite items in the tray for some newness.
Get a bunch of colored bottles (say old alcohol bottles) and place them at one corner of the coffee table. Say for instance, if the seating arrangement surrounds only two edges of the coffee table, place these bottles in an interesting arrangement in the far corner of the table, so that it does not disturb any attempt at conversation. Place a dry flower arrangement, a bunch of fresh blooms, or fillers such as white sand or wood shavings in these. Alternately, simply place the empty bottles on an interesting place mat and your coffee table decoration is ready. You may tie contrasting colored ribbons on the bottles for some added character to the bottles.
Book lovers will find that placing their favorite books in an interesting pattern on a coffee table makes for a wonderful coffee table decorating idea and a great conversation starter. If possible, color coordinate a couple of coffee table books, simply stack them, and place a tray with some interesting items of decoration on them.
Now, if you are looking for a glass coffee table decorating idea, then try this. Create unique stain glass patterns on the table to make your own masterpiece. Stain glass painting is simple and something you will definitely enjoy. You can stain paint a small area or the entire table according to your choice. If you indulge in this table decoration idea, you won't need any other enhancements to beautify your coffee table.
