Mehmet Mehdi Eker, 1 Ocak 1956'da Diyarbakır'da doğdu. Babasının adı Abdullah, annesinin adı Fehime'dir. Veteriner Hekim ve Tarım Ekonomisi Uzmanı; Ankara Üniversitesi Veteriner Fakültesini bitirdi. Yüksek lisansını İngiltere'de University of Aberdeen'de, doktorasını Ankara Üniversitesinde tamamladı. Tarım ve Köyişleri Bakanlığının değişik birimlerinde üst düzey görevlerde bulundu. 22 ve 23. Dönemde Diyarbakır Milletvekili seçildi. 22. Dönemde Avrupa Konseyi Parlamenter Meclisi ve Batı Avrupa Birliği Parlamenter Asamblesi Türk Grubu Üyesi olarak görev yaptı. 59 ve 60. Hükümette Tarım ve Köyişleri Bakanlığı görevini üstlendi. 61. Hükümette Gıda Tarım ve Hayvancılık Bakanlığı görevine atandı. İngilizce bilen Eker, evli ve 3 çocuk babasıdır.
