Hoop - A hoop earring is just what it sounds like. This type of earring can be round or oval, and will run through the piercing in your earlobe. A hoop earring can be anywhere from tiny to almost touching your shoulder.

Stud - A round stone that has a post and are typically smaller. Diamond stud earrings are hugely popular in today's fashion. Studs can be in any shape, size and color.

Fish Hook - A fish hook is a certain type of earring hanger. The part that runs through your earring hole looks like a fish hook, hence the name.

French hoop - This type of earring hanger is rounded, and is open at the bottom of it. This allows it to be passed through your ear piercing easily.

Leverback - This type is made for pierced and non-pierced ears. The back can flip up and hold the earring in place by pressing on the back of the earlobe.

Screw On - An earring designed for non-pierced ears. This back screws onto the back of the ear, allowing the earring to stay in place. This type of earring back is not very popular anymore however. One reason is that it can become very uncomfortable after a pro-longed period of time.

Try going for a feminine look. This is perfect if you'd like sewing projects or you just enjoy shopping at craft sites. You don't have to make jewelry anymore to get handmade jewelry. Instead, you can just pay a little bit more money. Some sellers may even offer to give you your choice of material colors and can be feminine and do all the work for you. This allows you to get a custom look without spending a lot of money and you won't even have to do the work. Usually designing the jewelry is the really fun part and you won't have the frustration of making the jewelry. You can find pieces with different bits of lace, ruffles, fabric flowers, ribbons, and buttons or even pieces of costume jewelry. This gives you a chance to have a trendy and feminine look to your outfit and that's okay that the materials won't last forever because the style probably won't either.

All earrings designs are not equal. You might think that plain gold or silver earrings are boring. You can really get the most out of your money to just by going with a unique design whenever you choose a very traditional color or material. For instance, you might be able to find large oval earrings that have a lot of different gold threads running around them for almost a sculptural element which will be a one-of-a-kind piece of art. This will also look modern or contemporary and really make large statements.

Another area where you can really have fun is by going with a natural feel. Right now there seems to be kind of an organic look. You'll find a lot of jewelry made out of leather, wood pieces or gem nuggets. This gives a funky and almost rock star feeling. You can see this kind of jewelry on a lot of celebrities. You could even just change up the classic pearl earrings by going with shell earrings. This will bring in a rainbow of colors and be a little bit of different than what most other women are wearing and still have a little bit of a traditional feeling to it.
