In the afternoon of March 7,1971 Father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman addressed a historic congregation of millions of people at the then Race Course ground (now Suhrawardy Uddayan). As Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman walked on the stage, people welcomed him with the slogans “Joy Bangla”. In a thunderous voice, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared 'Ebarer Sangram Amader Muktir Sangram, Ebarer Sangram Swadhinatar Sangram' ("this struggle is for our freedom, this struggle is for our independence").
The month of March is one of the most memorable months for the people of Bangladesh because many important events occurred during this month in 1971. Among these most memorable events is the speech by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The speech elevated him to new heights of leadership. The speech touched the sentiment of the common people of the country.
In the speech, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman spoke briefly about the state of Pakistan during 1947-71. To him, it was a period of bitterness, a period of martyrs. He referred to the shedding of blood in 1952, the treachery committed by refusing to show respect to the results of the elections of 1954, imposition of martial law in 1958.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman called upon all Bangalees of then East Pakistan (i.e. today's Bangladesh) to launch a decisive struggle against the Pakistani occupation forces indicating for taking all-out preparations for the War of Liberation.
