Farid Hardja memulai karier musiknya pada tahun 1966, di saat negeri ini mengalami transisi dari era Orde Lama ke Orde Baru. Saat itu demam British Invasion masih melanda dunia. Setahun berselang Farid Hardja kembali ke kampung halamannya, Sukabumi, dan membentuk grup Bani Adam yang lebih dominan memainkan warna rock and roll dan sedikit R&B. Adapun pemilihan nama "Bani Adam" dengan filosofi bahwa kita ini semua adalah Bani Adam atau ummatnya Nabi Adam. Pada tahun 1977, Jackson Records & Tapes milik Jackson Arief mulai merilis debut album Farid Hardja bersama Bani Adam dengan nama Farid Bani Adam yang melejitkan Karmila.
