Grup band punk rock Indonesia yang terbentuk awal 1997, mereka terbentuk atas latar belakang kesamaan dalam menyikapi belantika hidup satu sama lainnya. Mereka berusaha menyampaikan suatu pesan akan suatu penolakan maupun penerimaan dan harapan setelah apa yang dirasa, dilihat, di raba, dan di dengar dalam kehidupan sehari-hari.

Awalnya, mereka ingin kuliah, tapi semakin lama mereka tidak tertarik. Apa yang dipelajari di kampus telah mereka kuasai, mereka telah ahli dalam menggambar, desain dan lain-lain. Para personel Marjinal bertemu dan membicarakan situasi di luar kampus, yang atmospherenya bersifat represif, nggak bebas mengeluarkan pendapat atau berekspresi. Lalu mereka membangun sebuah jaringan namanya Anti Facist Racist Action (AFRA), yang didalamnya berisi kawan-kawan yang mempunyai kesadaran melawan sistem yang fasis.

Mereka menggunakan media visual, lewat poster dari cukil kayu, baliho dan lukisan yang menggugah kesadaran generasi muda, untuk melawan sistem fasis yang diusung Orde Baru. Selain melakukan diskusi, penerbitan newsletter, dan aksi turun ke jalan, mereka secara kebetulan juga bermain musik. Dengan modal gitar dan jurus tiga kunci, mereka membuat lagu sendiri yang berangkat dari kenyataan hidup sehari-hari. Kemudian mereka menamakan kelompok itu awalnya Anti Military.

Marjinal terinflunce oleh Sex Pistols, Bob Marley, Leo Kristi, Toy Dolls, Bad Religion , The Crass, Benyamin S, dan Ramones, memulai awal karirnya pada tahun 1997 ketika itu masih menggunakan nama AA (Anti ABRI ) dan AM (Anti Military ) dalam komunitas underground dengan formasi: Romi Jahat (vocal), Mike (gitar ), Bob (bass), Steven (drum) dan menelurkan album pertama pada tahun 1997 dan album kedua di tahun 1999.

Dalam perkembangannya, Anti Military dipahami orang-orang sebagai sebuah band, Padahal mereka bukan musisi dalam arti sesungguhnya! Musik menurut mereka hanya sebagai alat komunikasi kepada khalayak yang lebih luas, lebih asyik, medium menyampaikan pesan dan jadi inspirasi untuk anak-anak di pergerakan ke depan ketika melihat kenyataan kehidupan sosial-politik dikangkangi rejim yang fasis militeristik.

Memasuki tahun 2001 band punk rock ini mulai menanggalkan nama AA dan AM, mereka resmi menggunakan nama baru yaitu Marjinal. Nama baru tersebut di dapat ketika Mike terinspirasi oleh nama pejuang buruh perempuan “Marsinah..Marsinah..Marjinal” asal Surabaya yang sangat berani dalam meperjuangkan haknya sebagai kaum buruh. Namun sayang belum sampai pada saatnya, marsinah wafat dalam tugas suci yang mulia akibat penyiksaan yang dilakukan oleh aparat berseragam loreng sebagai anjing-anjing peliharaan sang kapitalis.

Tidak hanya itu Marsinah pun menginspirasikan Marjinal dalam meriliskan album ketiga dengan judul album ”Marsinah” bercoverkan wajah marsinah dengan format hitam putih. Luar biasa, Judul lagu ”Marsinah” yang sama dengan judul albumnya, sangat familiar sekali karena banyak kalangan anak muda menyanyikan lagu ”Marsinah” di tongkrongan, studio musik, bahkan dalam sebuah pagelaran musik.

Di tahun 2005 Marjinal kembali menelurkan album ke-4 dengan tema sang ”Predator” yang terdiri kaset 1 & 2. Proses penggarapan album ke-4 ini sudah megalami kemajuan karena di dukung dengan alat yang mumpuni, sangat berbeda jauh sekali jika bandingkan album sebelumnya, baik di lihat dari design cover maupun hasil rekaman kaset.

Selama kiprahnya di industri musik indie, Marjinal sudah mengalami beberapa kali gonta-ganti atau bongkar pasang personil, dan sampai saat sekarang ini marjinal masih di perkuat oleh Romi Jahat (vocal), Mike (gitar), bob (bass), Proph (drum) yang kini untuk terus berjalan bersama agar tetap hidup berusaha menyampaikan pesan sebuah amanat penderitaan rakyat yang dituangkan dalam bentuk media musik.
