Flowers are an important component of festivities, religious and cultural events. Blossoms and foliage are arranged to create interesting designs. While fresh flowers are primarily used in floral arrangements, they are sometimes combined with artificial and dried flowers to enhance the appearance of the bouquets.

Types of flower arrangements

Mass arrangements

Inspired by the traditional European style of arranging flowers, a mass arrangement of flowers creates a closed and thick silhouette. This geometric design uses large quantities of plant materials. Instead of emphasizing on individual components, it focuses on overall appearance of the floral arrangement. The most popular designs in mass arrangements are oval or round shapes. As most flowers are present in this form in nature, round flower arrangements create a serene ambiance. Triangular arrangements are extremely attractive. It is used for creating beautiful colorful bouquets.

Line arrangements

Line arrangements are inspired by the Japanese style of arranging flowers. Unlike mass arrangements, line arrangements use less plant materials. They focus on individual flowers or foliage. With three contrasting forms dominating the preparation, this type of floral arrangement boasts of an open silhouette. While mass arrangements emphasis on symmetry, the linear arrangements are more asymmetrical.

Line-mass arrangements

This form of flower arrangement combines the Japanese line preparation with the European mass preparation. It is a clearer form of floral arrangement with sufficient open space. With the mass preparation occupying the central area, additional foliage or blooms are used to give a linear shape to the preparation.

Role of color in flower arrangements

The colors of the blooms and the foliage play an important role in floral preparation. You can use similar colors or a combination of different colors. The colors are chosen according to occasion. Bright colors such as red, yellow and orange create a warm and happy ambiance.

Vertical: Either settle foam at the bottom of the vase or simply wedge the flower stems to one side of the vase. You can also hand tie a vertically assembled bunch. Leave the stems uncut, and cut away the leaves and other twigs for a finished look. While orchids make an ideal choice for impressive vertical floral designs, carnations, roses, lilies and chrysanthemums, along with baby's breath, are other good options.

Horizontal: Such floral arrangement designs are prepared in low or shallow containers, using anchor foam, anchor pins and position sprays to set the style. Florists set the focal blossoms in the middle of the container, while additional foliage, such as leaves, twigs, baby's breath or a flower wreath lie outside the main container, touching its edges. These make interesting centerpieces as well as wedding presents.

Triangular: Florists settle the bottom of the container/vase with floral foam. The vertical and horizontal height of the arrangement is determined in a way that the floral style is triangular in shape. Focal flowers are placed on the edge of the vase or container, while the other foliage is arranged around the focal design. For a classic and subtle look, utilize one flower in contrasting colors or ask experienced florists to design an exclusive arrangement with a mix of different blossoms.

Crescent: This is an exclusive yet popularly used style for floral arrangement designs. Florists utilize unique containers/vases to create such styles. Floral foam is settled at the bottom of the vase. Then the floral designers strategically align the flowers and other foliage in a crescent form, at an angle such that the balance of the container is not lost. Focal flowers are placed towards the lower side to achieve balance.
