Maui Revealed 7th Edition

Quite a nice guide, the author has an amusing attitude. I bought the app after perusing our hosts 5 year old book. The up to date information in the app was helpful. As was being able to favorite things and search by our current location.

This app was a disappointment. Whereas the book is the standard reference for maui (no questions asked) this app is asking a lot (8$) and giving nothing of you might expect. 1. Stars which you gave certain points of interest do not show up on the map. 2. Gps does only work when airplane mode is turned off. But since when you are outdoors you have probably bad or no reception - and you can see the battery draining. Why? Gps has nothing to do with wifi or cell towers. 3. When e.g. driving to Hana you would like to see whats coming up on the map. But instead you have to tap on the map and you get an airline distance to points of interest. So happy tapping to find something! And then when you want to see the exact location, you need to go into a real map - but you might not have reception, so you cannot even see where it is. So what does the app actually do? Filtering poi's relative to your tapped location - in a plain list. I like apps, but this isn't worth 8$. This is useless.

When I went to Oahu 2 years ago I balked at the $8 price of the app. We chose to take an older version of the book with us instead. That thing went everywhere we did, which meant carrying a backpack around. Some of the restaurants they recommended had closed, but otherwise things were great. Now prepping for Maui we could only find an old version of the book. I've read that and this is simply an updated and interactive version. Love that links are included and that it works with your maps. Totally worth it!

The ability to link directly to Google maps to get directions was fantastic.

Like the Ohau app, this has much of the book content, without the nice organization of an eBook (which mirrors the paper book, but I haven't seen). For example, the contents start with "Sights" and then "Introduction" and "The Basics" are listed further down. Also, it has some, but not all of the updates the author puts on his website. It's "just ok" since it's not quite as good as an eBook-version of the paper book and the updates are inconsistent. I also couldn't find any detailed maps showing where the various sites are located relative to each other (though you can locate where a specific destination is). I would recommend this app for someone familiar with the book to use as a portable reference. If you've never seen the book, this might not meet your expectations. I would flip through an older version of the book to get familiar with the style/structure and how to use it, and then review the current version via app for your actual planning! Personally, I'm not a fan of the app having a book version attached to it, but I can see why there is a business motivation to sell newer versions every few years.

I absolutely recommend this to anyone visiting Maui for the very first time, especially in conjunction with the book. Very well organized. Useful comments on all the beaches and other sights, helpful guides to food (although we didn't always agree, but then again food is not the real highlight in Hawaii). The best feature of the app is that at the end of every beach/site/food commentary you can click on a "Directions" button, which takes you to your phone's map app and navigates you right to your spot. Saves time and hassle every time you use it. Cheapest and best tour guide I ever had.

What an amazing trip, this app/book is very uptodate and even locals were surprised at the level of details it provided. Would recommend! Dining details helped a lot! The authors were right, Bully's BBQ in upcountry is amazing.

Perfect companion to the book! Love that it works without a signal, and it's awesome to be able to check that you are actually in the place you meant to be! I recommend these guidebooks and the app to everyone I know who travels to Hawaii. Thank you for the hard work that goes in to making these great!
