About BPM-Detector

New!

Unlike the others, this app actually LISTENS to the music using the phone's on-board microphone. Simply start the app, and the BPM is updated once every seven seconds. The app works best with music that has a strong beat.

Select either 60-120 BPM or 100-200 BPM to get estimates in those ranges.

Choose from either the modern or old-fashioned skin.

Switch the app into "nerd mode" to have a look under the hood. Watch as a spectrogram is generated in real-time (choose color or black & white). Below the spectrogram you will see the rate of energy change of the music. Peaks represent beats or other musically significant events. Once every seven seconds, the bottom of the screen displays a chart with the candidate beats per minute. The largest values are the most likely.

Note that the app also works on music without a strong beat, but you may have to snap your fingers, clap, or tap on the screen to the music to help it register energy transitions correctly.

For fun, try beatboxing while running the app!

What's Changed
New!
V2.0 features:
1) Includes a new skin: Cleaner, crisper, and easier to read.
2) For fans of the old skin, it remains largely the same, but with improved readability.
3) A standard preferences dialog makes selecting different modes more intuitive.
4) Most importantly, the app now includes a two BPM detection ranges: 60-120 and 100-200. Pick the speed range that fits your music, and you'll no longer have to multiple or divide by two the get the correct BPM!

My friend and I use different BPM apps. This one gives a different BPM than the others... And its wrong. I don't know if the phone could effect this, the version, IDK. But this app simply does not work properly. My phone: HTC one vx, Jelly Bean

Q70%
by Q####:

Sorry guys, great idea but the app seems to pickup sounds other than beats and thinks they're beats. New Order - Tutti Frutti 177bpm according to your app. I don't know the actual bpm for the song but 177 is wildly out.

Doesn't seem to work very well on my g3.

I tried, but how is this thing supposed to differentiate between 8th at 100 or quarter notes at 200? ...... Also where is the love for the punk fans where many songs exceed 20p BMP?????

W70%
by W####:

The algorithm is really effective, it gets the BPM right even when the volume is low, in a noisy room, with tracks that don't have a strong bass... Amazing good.

Q70%

I really like it especially the nerd mode. However it would be cool to be able to detect e.g. faster tekno tracks, please add that.

I am using this on every dancefloor to verify that the dj is too slow again ;)

set the range to 100-200 BPMs and multyliply the output by 2 if the track is up to 400, by 4 if it's more than 400, etc

Might not be perfect, but good for closing in on a bpm for a starting point.

It doesn't work very well for me, probably because of my instruments (fiddle, flute, accordion) that don't usually have the "strong beat" that the description recommends. I found that it spent most of its time trying to figure out my speed, would display a number, and then erase it quickly. The number also jumped around wildly. I tried it out with a few friends, and while they agreed that I was playing with a clear rhythm, my (android) phone wasn't very good at getting the beat right. It worked pretty will with a friend's guitar, though, and I also tried it with my mandolin, which worked. But if you have a "smooth" instrument, you probably won't find it very useful. And it does use a lot of battery.

Played with it for a few minutes. Couldn't figure out how to access the menu or settings. I wanted to try out the nerd mode to understand why it was getting random readings unrelated to what I thought I could hear, but I could not figure out how to do that. The only control I found was to toggle between two BPM ranges, but that didn't seem to do much. Even with no music around, it seems to detect random BPMs. Confused. Perhaps following more of the standard Google Design Principles (or Material Design) would make things easier to understand.

Works pretty well especially for a free app, has been on point or very close every time

The numbers are completely random. The application uses to microphone to gather data.

I tested the app with a digital metronome, and it works very well -- generally to an accuracy of plus or minus 1 BPM. The option to switch between two different ranges is quite nice and improves the accuracy -- as long as the tempo stays away from the endpoints of the selected range. Unfortunately, I cannot see any way to display the spectrogram, open the app options, or get an ad-free version (if one exists). Where is all this hidden?

Simply listens and counts the beats. Works well in the ranges 99-194 beats. Great for setting up a clock and getting it into beat. I can also use this app to potentially work out how many seconds a clock is loosing or gaining. Certainly better than other apps I've tried. If it included one decimal place reading, I would give this 5*.
