About Golden Ratio
The golden ratio is the most aesthetically pleasing proportion. You can find it in nature, architecture, art, biology or just about anywhere. Some even call it the “divine proportion.”
As a number it is simple. If you take x and divide by y and get 1.6180339887.... you have found two numbers that are in the golden ratio. Written exactly the golden ratio is (1+√5)/2.
Some examples of things that are designed to have the golden ratio are:
- The ratio of the sides of a playing card, postcard, poster, car, etc
- The ratio of some segments of a pentagram
- The ratio of the spirals of a nautilus shell
- The ratio of the spirals of a pine cone
- The ratio of facial features on a human being
- Many aspects with the human body
- Various aspects of the Parthenon
Once upon a time I was making a book shelf. I knew how tall I wanted it to be, but I wasn't sure how wide to make it. I didn't want it to look too skinny or too wide. Was there a way to design the bookshelf and know it would look appropriate? The golden ratio was the answer. This app was created to help people calculate numbers that will be consistent with the golden ratio. In my case I knew I wanted the bookshelf to be 6 feet tall. In this app you can input the value of 6 and the app will tell you the numbers up and down that will produce the golden ratio.

I've been looking for an app like this for a while. I found it while sitting in a restaurant eating chicken with a friend. We were having a conversation about certain dimensions using the golden ratio, and lo and behold this app proved him right. Simple and easy to use. Good job!
